Paula was born with multiple Congenital Heart Defects (CHD's) Tetralogy of Fallot, Atrial Septal Def Paula faces additionl open heart surgeries.

Tetralogy of Fallot is a CHD (congenital heart defect) where a child is born with a large ventricular septal defect, pulmonary stenosis, right ventricular hypertrophy, and an overriding aorta. She also has Pulmonary Valve Stenosis and she also had an atrial septal defect. We are thankful that right now she is stable and healthy. Paula is our hero, she is Super Girl Paula. What Is Tetralogy of Fall

ot? Tetralogy (teh-TRAL-o-je) of Fallot (fah-LO) is a congenital heart defect. This is a problem with the heart's structure that's present at birth. Congenital heart defects change the normal flow of blood through the heart. Tetralogy of Fallot is a rare, complex heart defect. It occurs in about 5 out of every 10,000 babies. The defect affects boys and girls equally. To understand tetralogy of Fallot, it helps to know how a healthy heart works. Tetralogy of Fallot involves four heart defects:
•A large ventricular septal defect (VSD)
•Pulmonary (PULL-mun-ary) stenosis
•Right ventricular hypertrophy (hi-PER-tro-fe)
•An overriding aorta

Ventricular Septal Defect

The heart has an inner wall that separates the two chambers on its left side from the two chambers on its right side. This wall is called a septum. The septum prevents blood from mixing between the two sides of the heart. A VSD is a hole in the septum between the heart's two lower chambers, the ventricles. The hole allows oxygen-rich blood from the left ventricle to mix with oxygen-poor blood from the right ventricle. Pulmonary Stenosis

This defect involves narrowing of the pulmonary valve and the passage from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery. Normally, oxygen-poor blood from the right ventricle flows through the pulmonary valve and into the pulmonary artery. From there, the blood travels to the lungs to pick up oxygen. In pulmonary stenosis, the pulmonary valve cannot fully open. Thus, the heart has to work harder to pump blood through the valve. As a result, not enough blood reaches the lungs. Right Ventricular Hypertrophy

With this defect, the muscle of the right ventricle is thicker than usual. This occurs because the heart has to work harder than normal to move blood through the narrowed pulmonary valve. Overriding Aorta

This defect occurs in the aorta, the main artery that carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body. In a healthy heart, the aorta is attached to the left ventricle. This allows only oxygen-rich blood to flow to the body. In tetralogy of Fallot, the aorta is located between the left and right ventricles, directly over the VSD. As a result, oxygen-poor blood from the right ventricle flows directly into the aorta instead of into the pulmonary artery. Outlook

With tetralogy of Fallot, not enough blood is able to reach the lungs to get oxygen, and oxygen-poor blood flows to the body. Babies and children who have tetralogy of Fallot have episodes of cyanosis (si-ah-NO-sis). Cyanosis is a bluish tint to the skin, lips, and fingernails. It occurs because the oxygen level in the blood leaving the heart is below normal. Tetralogy of Fallot is repaired with open-heart surgery, either soon after birth or later in infancy. The timing of the surgery will depend on how narrow the pulmonary artery is. Over the past few decades, the diagnosis and treatment of tetralogy of Fallot have greatly improved. Most children who have this heart defect survive to adulthood. However, they'll need lifelong medical care from specialists to help them stay as healthy as possible.

Supergirl had an appointment with her cardiologist yesterday. Overall it went well. She is having some extra beats and experiencing some neurocardiogenic
syncope episodes. Since the extra beats are only occurring 1% of the time it's just a wait and see thing. If it gets to be 20% of the time then they will have to do some intervention, either open heart surgery or a visit to the cath lab. The syncope is occurring because of an imbalance in her electrolytes so she needs to drink a special electrolyte drink called LMNT. All in all it was a pretty good appointment and no significant changes to her heart. Thank you all for the thoughts and prayers.

This sweet girl has a birthday coming up. Her Daddy will be starting chemo next week so we will be celebrating her birthday with just our immediate family. We can't risk the germs. Sadly, we had to say our goodbyes to our Sweet Jazzy Girl. She was 7 years old and she was Paula's best friend. They were inseparable, where Paula was Jazzy was never far behind.

Paula had a check up today and she is doing great! We will be heading to Tampa soon for at least a week because her daddy, has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer and has surgery coming up. On June 21st, the love of my life was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. We have met with his oncologist several times and we finally met his surgeon on Thursday. While he is very optimistic, the surgeon did say that Donny has a long road to recovery. He has surgery scheduled for September 20th and they will be removing the part of his colon where the tumor is and then he will resection the colon. We have no idea what stage his cancer is and we won't know until after surgery. He will be in the hospital for a minimum of 6 days. We have to travel to Tampa, which is a little over 3 hours from home, to Moffitt Cancer Center. We just spent 2 days there and thankfully we liked the surgeon and his staff. Recovery time is expected to be between 6-8 weeks. you can imagine we are very worried and would greatly appreciate your thoughts and prayers.

I just booked our hotel and even with the discount for being a patient at the Cancer Center a weeks stay is about $1,000 and that doesn't include food or gas back and forth. Thankfully we have my mom to stay with Paula so she isn't stuck in a germ infested hospital all the time. Our PayPal is [email protected] we would appreciate any and all support.

Every year Paula chooses a project to work on to help other seriously ill children. We have fed families at the Ronald McDonald House, we have donated toys to the hospital and the Ronald McDonald House, we have done care bags for children and families who are inpatient. This year she has decided that she would love to make and send cards to sick children and their siblings. She has a Cricut machine to do crafts with but she is in need of supplies. We already have 20 children signed up to receive cards. If you would like to help her complete her project I helped her create an Amazon wishlist for supplies. Paula got a huge surprise in the mail today. She received her very special handmade quilt. Thank you to everyone who included messages for her. This will be something that she will treasure forever. Sadly, we have had to say goodbye to some of our family who sent messages so through the tears I told her it was like getting hugs from Heaven. 🥰❤
