A recap of our sun-soaked 🇿🇦 tour—in a visit filled with superlatives, from the food to the flora and seascapes to the vineyards, what we treasure most is in fact our interactions with the incredibly warm and overwhelmingly positive South African people. At every stop, we were welcomed like family and made to feel at home unlike anything we’ve ever experienced around the world. It’s been a totally wholesome monthlong adventure, and we simply can’t wait to return to this splendid land soon!! 💛

I’m deeply humbled to be announced today as the 2023 recipient of the Canada Council for the Arts | Conseil des arts du Canada Virginia Parker Prize, the 🇨🇦 nation’s highest distinction for young musicians.

Je suis profondément honoré d’être annoncé aujourd’hui comme le récipiendaire 2023 du Prix Virginia-Parker du Conseil des Arts du Canada, la plus haute distinction nationale pour les jeunes musiciens!!

Besides the handsome stipend which will help to make some of my dream long-term projects come true, I’m especially honoured to be counted among a long list of Canadian classical music legends and heroes of mine, such as James Ehnes and Yannick Nezet-Seguin 🤯

The Canada Council has been absolutely instrumental (😉) in supporting my career over the last 6 years, starting with receiving the NYO Canada Michael Measures Prize in 2017, to winning their Musical Instrument Bank competition in 2018 and 2023, resulting in consecutive loans of the ca. 1696 ‘Bonjour’ Stradivari, to their incredible generosity in financially assisting nearly every national and international tour that I have undertaken since 2018, as well as the recording of Cheng² Duo’s most recent album, Portrait 💿

I can’t express my gratitude enough—every day, and particularly today, I feel so unbelievably lucky to be Canadian, and to be able to represent Canada on the world stage 🥰

[🎓] An absolute delight returning to University of South Africa (Unisa) Gauteng Region after winning the International Strings Competition on this very campus last year!! It was especially heartwarming to reunite with dear friends we met during the competition, and meet new ones who greeted us so passionately in our official duo recital debut on the continent 🌍

Still feeling warm & fuzzy from this past weekend’s celebrations of 💿 P O R T R A I T 💿! Life has a funny way of coming full circle: little did we know while recording at The Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts in December 2022 that the first concert we’d have physical CDs in hand for would be 10 months later in the very same hall, which just happens to be one of our absolute favourites 🥰

Thank you to everyone who came to see us in Kingston and celebrate with us & dear Dinuk Wijeratne the next night in Ottawa at the National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts 🍁 We couldn’t have dreamt up a more enthusiastic and loving full house to launch this album with! 🧡🧡

After a lovely family vacation reuniting at long last with loved ones back in China, I’m delighted to be returning to the musical and digital world with some good news: I have the immense privilege to be again receiving a 3-year loan of the ca. 1696 ‘Bonjour’ Stradivari cello from the Canada Council for the Arts | Conseil des arts du Canada, the first cellist in the ’s history to be awarded consecutive loans of this amazing instrument.

Je tiens également à exprimer ma profonde gratitude au Groupe Canimex pour son générosité au cours de la dernière année, en me prêtant le violoncelle Stradivari « Dubois » de 1699 et deux magnifiques archets, et je suis reconnaissant pour leur soutien continu.

With organizations like these, I’m constantly reminded by how lucky I am to experience firsthand the way this country 🇨🇦 and its citizens care so deeply about music and the arts, actively finding ways to make sure that its artists can benefit directly from the system. In the end, when the arts win, we all win!

Thank you Canada 🍁 for your belief in the power of music, and I’m looking forward to continue representing our home and native land on the international stage! 🌎🌍🌏🎶🎻 🫶🏼

[🎭] A gorgeous venue for our Michigan debut, the Cheboygan Opera House built in 1888 (check out the stunning interior 🤩)!

We felt like we were back in Canada with the open-armed and open-hearted welcome we received, not only on stage but also in all our interactions with the locals 🫂

We’re now continuing the summer festival circuit in great spirits and heading back to our hometown for a slew of concerts, not as a duo, but in various solo and chamber music formations at Ottawa Chamberfest—see you next week at Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre!!

[🐋] We had a whale of a time in Les Bergeronnes, Québec at the Festival Intime De Musique Classique! We always like to squeeze in as much nature time as possible wherever we go (especially by the ocean)—this weekend we went rock climbing, foraging, and humpback-watching 😁🐳

Un grand merci aux mélomanes enthousiastes qui nous ont donné un sens de la communauté bouleversant et qui nous ont montré l'importance de promouvoir la culture et la musique non seulement dans les grandes métropoles mais aussi dans les petites villes comme celle-ci 🫂 Odyssée artistique

Deeply saddened to learn that the great master Menahem Pressler is no longer with us…we grew up listening to his legendary recordings with the Beaux Arts Trio as well as live at Ottawa Chamberfest, and later had the privilege to play for him several times as our grandteacher (Silvie’s professor at Manhattan School of Music, Jeffrey Cohen, was his student at Indiana University). There was simply no one who had the kind of sound and touch that he did, with seemingly endless gradations of sensitivity between piano and pianissimo alone 🥹

The last lesson he imparted on us was that “the search for, and sense of, beauty is endless”. Thank you, Mr. Pressler, for your wisdom, kindness, and inspiration—you will stay with us in every note of our lifelong search ❤️

[🗽] Still on a high after our completely packed, standing-room-only recital in New York at The National Arts Club a few nights ago!! It was heartwarming to re-connect with so many dear friends and supporters after more than three years since our last NYC performance on March 10, 2020, which also happened to be at the NAC and was the last concert we gave before the world shut down.
