The Enrollment Conversation
Our city is changing and so are we. Because of drops in local birth rates and a population decrease in Potter County, our enrollment is declining. Students aren’t leaving AISD for other school districts; there are simply fewer school-age children in AISD than there once were. The data paints a clear picture of what is happening and why. Our school board and district administration have been studying the issue closely and considering our best next steps.

Caprock High School senior Connor Castaneda was in the middle of a shift at Target when he got the news of his life. Shaking with anticipation, his fingers fumbled across his phone. “I probably put in my username and password like ten different times and finally it opened up,” recalls Connor. “And then I click on it and it lags for 15 seconds or so, and I’m thinking, that’s pretty good because a video or confetti graphics wouldn’t load right away.” Sure enough, after the longest 15 seconds, the web page–and the confetti he had been waiting for–loads. The message welcomes Connor to the Class of 2027 at Harvard University. Each year, more than 60,000 hopeful students apply, but Harvard accepts fewer than 2,000. Connor is a National Merit scholar, plays in the Caprock band and takes all of the more difficult classes, but he thinks what got him into Harvard is what he puts into everything he does. “You know, I’m not the best in band, but man, I go and try my best. I do science. I work hard to satisfy my own brain. A lot of people just see me, but they don’t see what goes in. I worked hard and that’s something I can be proud of.” With Harvard a mere 1,904 miles from Caprock High School, Connor knows things will be a bit different. “Worse Mexican food, better seafood,” he laughs. “I think it’s going to be pretty fun.”

This year, for the first time, PD Theatre students competed in the Texas Thespian Virtual Performance Contest. We qualified 9 members as Texas Theatre Scholars (an honor that is similar and equal to national Honor Society) and had seven entries in the Thespy competitions.

A HUGE Congratulations goes to PD Varsity Theatre Actress Serenaty Gonzalez for being named as a NATIONAL QUALIFIER (State Champion)- the first performer in AISD to receive this honor! Kim Nguyen was only one point away from sharing this honor with Serenaty. We are so proud!!!

All Amarillo ISD Schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 24, 2023. After checking the roads this morning and then consulting with weather experts about the additional snowfall expected throughout the morning, we feel this is the safest decision for everyone. Making decisions that affect not just our students, staff and families, but also our entire community is not always easy, so we thank you for your patience and support and we hope you all stay warm and safe. 🥶❄️
