**What are the best IDEs for Java programmers?
-This is one of the questions I had to research when I started learning Java recently.
I quickly realized that there were 3 main “competitors” in this field. This are- Eclipse, Intellij IDEA and NetBeans. Although VisualStudio is quite popular as well, so let’s make it the best of 4.
a) Eclipse – lots of features, add-ons, plugins, community support, etc. To me, this IDE looks more “professional” in a sense that the menus, buttons and the “feel” of it is a bit like a CMS software used a lot in all sorts of businesses. Overall, fully-featured, free and with lots of add-ons and support, if you need it.
b) NetBeans – still seems to be quite popular, especially within the veteran developers community, as far as I saw from research. For a beginner, like me, I didn’t really like it to be honest. Its looks are a bit outdated even in the latest version. Still, it does have a lot of features, obviously, but I just didn’t even want to get into it much.
c) Intellij IDEA – I must admit, I did enjoy this one the most and still use it in my studies, especially since the online Java course I’m currently going through has a special plugin for this IDE. I like the look and feel of this software and the way its menus are organized. There are more than enough features in the free Community Edition, especially for a beginner. I started to customize its look even further, based on a free theme available from its Marketplace. Overall, I feel like I will stick with this one for the time being.
d) VisualStudio – looks somewhat similar to IntellijIDEA I think. I would personally put it the second place, at least looks-wise. Have not used it that much to comment properly on the features etc., but if I ever need to choose a different IDE for development then I will definitely check it out in more depth.
