Hi everyone! My name is Nina and I’m in my third year on the field hockey team!
Growing up playing competitive sports, I’ve found that the mental aspect of sport can be something extremely difficult to cope with. It’s easy to get in your own head and let your doubts and fears get in the way of your performance. To help me stay focused in competition, I started reading books and articles that discuss different strategies such as developing mental toughness. I like to read an article or small section of a book the night before practices and games to give me something to focus on the next day when I’m on the field. I’ve found that by doing this, my performance has improved, and I’ve gotten better at shaking off my mistakes and focusing on the next task at hand. Your mind influences your performance just as much as your physical abilities, so it’s important that you find strategies that work for you to strengthen and take care of it!
Join us Jan 25th to hear from Kendra Fisher!!
Kendra is a past member of Team Canada’s women’s hockey program. She was forced to step away from the team due to mental illness. Now, after 10 years of mastering life with mental illness, she travels the world sharing her journey in an effort to educate on supports, resources and potential strategies for those struggling or supporting others dealing with mental health challenges.

Thank you for creating awareness during the month of November, we hope it continues in the following months as well. 💜💪🏼🧠
Introducing our first Insta Takeover:
Hey Mustangs! My name is Kevin and I am a first year on the swim team!
How I keep myself motivated to set minor goals and work towards those as opposed to big goals which may seem challenging or hard to achieve.
How I prioritize my mental health is to spend time with friends or treat myself to a nice meal. This gives me a nice break from practice or schoolwork and remotivates me to keep pushing on.

Hi there! My name is Madison Beishuizen and I’m a third year transfer student to Western and this is my first year with the Western Women’s hockey team.
Between the hectic days of classes and practice, and especially in season I like to set aside time in my mornings to do yoga. When I am on my mat I am able to set my intentions for the day and grasp ahold of a calm, steady breath which I carry throughout my day! This has helped me be mindful in stressful situations whether it be on the ice, in the gym or in the classroom! I recommend finding your ‘go to’ mindfulness technique for times when you’re stressed or anxious. Taking a deep breath or looking at it from a different perspective will radiate positivity for yourself and those around you!
Let’s go Mustangs!!
Hey Stangs! My name is Ella and I’m a second year Sciences student on the volleyball team.
I like to start my mornings off with a good stretch, to promote not only my mental health but my physical health as well. I’m often a bit groggy when first waking up, so a slower start like this really helps me ease into the day. Focusing on my breathing is another aspect of this, which is something I can fall back on if I’m feeling stressed later on. I also take this time to mentally prepare myself for what I’d like to accomplish that day! I find that prioritizing myself first thing in the morning also sets me up to give my best to others around me each day :)
