As shown at Dakar’s Biennale, West Africa's top contemporary international arts festival, Congolese artist Hilary Balu’s works had people talking. Balu turns sugar into incredible pieces of art depicting the Kongo Kingdom, referencing “the past enslavement of Africans to work on sugar plantations”.
“Taming sugar is the craziest experience I have ever had with sculpture. This complex material has really obsessed me with both its history of slavery with the Kongo kingdom and its essence of giving energy,” Balu said.
