The Deputy Minister of Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo delivered a speech at the Rotary Family Health Day event in the City of Mangaung on November 8, 2023. The speech marked the 11th anniversary of the partnership between the Department of Health and the Rotary Action Group for Family Health and AIDS Prevention. The Rotary Family Health Days campaign is recognized as a crucial annual event in the health calendar.
The Deputy Minister commended the Rotarians for their ongoing support in addressing HIV and AIDS, TB, and Mother Child and Women Health in South Africa. The theme of the day emphasized strengthening mother-baby pair interventions, particularly in line with the newly approved Maternal and Neonatal Guideline. Notably, South Africa initiated the validation process for the "Path to Elimination of Vertical Transmission of HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis B."
The speech highlighted challenges in 2022, such as outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases like measles, and called for increased vaccination coverage for under-five children. The Deputy Minister also discussed the Rotary's commitment to Polio eradication and the need to remain vigilant due to Polio outbreaks in neighbouring countries.
While acknowledging progress in reducing HIV in adults, concerns were raised about the lagging numbers in children and adolescents. The speech called for collective efforts through the Global Alliance to end AIDS in children by 2030.
The Deputy Minister reported positive strides in the National Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination program and urged women to undergo screening for Cervical Cancer. The speech touched on challenges like illegal abortions among women and an increasing number of young girls (10-14 years) delivering babies.
As the festive season approached, the Deputy Minister emphasized the ongoing HIV and AIDS pandemic in the country, revealing the need to put an additional estimated 1.2 million patients on treatment. Basic prevention strategies, including Pre-exposure prophylaxis, Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, male and female condoms, and water-based lubricants, were underscored.
The Deputy Minister concluded by launching the theme for the upcoming World AIDS Day: "LET COMMUNITIES LEAD," aligning with the SANAC Civil Society Forum Motto, 'Communities Matter.' The speech expressed gratitude to Rotarians and all partners for their continued support.
Present at the event and delivering significant messages to the community were notable figures, including RFHA Inc. CEO Ms. Sue Paget, Ms. Paula Morgan (Deputy Director for US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), SANAC Secretariat Rev Zwoitwaho Nevhutalu, SANAC Private Sector Forum Dr. Gopane, Civil Society Forum Mr. Mfundisi, Health MEC Ms. M Leeto, Speaker of Mangaung Metro Municipality Mr. Mathae, Free State Director-General Mr. Ralikontsane, and Executive Mayor Cllr. Nthatisi.

During the initial 28 days of life, a child faces the greatest risk of mortality. The World Health Organization underscores the significance of ensuring secure childbirth, providing proficient neonatal care, and implementing measures, including vaccination, to thwart diseases like pneumonia and diarrhoea, which are major contributors to the mortality of children under five. Additionally, enhancing nutritional practices is crucial.

MEASLES
Pronounced (MEE-zills)

Measles is a very contagious disease caused by a virus. It spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Measles starts with a cough, runny nose, red eyes, and fever. Then a rash of tiny, red spots breaks out. It starts at the head and spreads to the rest of the body.

Measles can be prevented with MMR vaccine. The vaccine protects against three diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella. CDC recommends children get two doses of MMR vaccine, starting with the first dose at 12 through 15 months of age, and the second dose at 4 through 6 years of age. Teens and adults should also be up to date on their MMR vaccination.
