Tongue-tie, also known as ankyloglossia, is a common condition where a small piece of tissue called a frenum restricts the normal movement of the tongue. This can cause difficulties with nursing, speaking, and other oral functions. Newborns who experience trouble nursing may have tongue-tie, which affects their ability to feed effectively.
Traditionally, treatment for baby tongue-tie involved โclipping and/or cuttingโ the restrictive frenum tissue, which could result in bleeding and stress for both the child and parents. However, thanks to advances in dental technology, there is now a more gentle and efficient approach: the WaterLase Laser Frenectomy.
Hereโs what you need to know:
What Is Tongue-Tie?
Tongue-tie occurs when the frenum under the tongue restricts movement, affecting nursing and other functions.
Babies with tongue-tie may be referred for a corrective surgery called a newborn frenectomy, where the restrictive frenum tissue is cut to provide greater tongue mobility.
WaterLase Laser Frenectomy: A Kinder Approach
The WaterLase Laser Frenectomy uses cool water during the procedure, resulting in:
No bleeding
No pain
No risk of infection
Instantaneous healing for infants
The entire procedure takes less than 1 minute.
Benefits of WaterLase Laser Frenectomy
Immediate Relief: Infants can nurse right away after the procedure.
Minimally Invasive: Unlike traditional methods, there is minimal trauma to the tissue.
Safe and Gentle: WaterLase technology provides a safe alternative to traditional dental tools.
Positive Impact: Parents often experience immense relief when they see their newborn comfortably nursing after the frenectomy.
Long-Term Implications
Tongue-tie can lead to various issues if left untreated:
Nursing and Eating Problems
Nutritional Challenges
Speech Difficulties
Airway Development Issues (linked to asthma, sleep disorders, allergies, and ADD/ADHD)
Early intervention is crucial to prevent long-term complications.
Remember, baby tongue-tie is common but often goes undiagnosed. If you suspect your child may have tongue-tie, seek professional evaluation and consider the gentle approach of WaterLase Laser Frenectomy. Itโs a small procedure with significant positive outcomes for both infants and parents

Brace Yourself: Laser-assisted Orthodontics are Trending.
The use of laser-assisted orthodontics is a relatively new concept, but as the range of capabilities expands, sophisticated orthodontists are catching on to laser efficiency and ease-of-use.
Diode lasers are increasingly being integrated into orthodontic practice, with numerous published studies demonstrating their advantages for aesthetic and soft tissue challenges. Lasers have many common applications in orthodontics including enamel etching, debonding of brackets, and pain management after orthodontic movement. Other common applications include:
Gingivectomy & Operculectomy:
Lasers offer a minimally invasive option for excising gingival tissue and deliver optimal healing and contour.
Papillae Augmentation:
Papilla reshaping is typically performed in conjunction with gingivectomy or gingivoplasty. Lasers are precise and effectively treat bulbous or loose interdental papillae to enhance gingival aesthetics without damaging surrounding tissue.
Frenectomy & Frenotomy:
Minimally invasive lasers are ideal for treating a restricted or tight frenum.
Tooth Exposure:
Lasers can significantly reduce treatment times for tissue removal.
Temporary Anchorage Device Uncovering
Lasers can be used for exposing TADS due to overgrowth of mobile mucosa. The result is optimal healing time and patient comfort.
Oral Hygiene:
Poor oral hygiene is common in orthodontic patients and can result in gingival overgrowth, pseudo-pocket formation, and plaque retention problems. Lasers can be used to remove pseudo pockets and provide patients with better access to improve their oral health regimen.
Aphthous Ulcer Treatment:
Low intensity lasers reduce pain associated with cold sores and lesions and reduce healing time.
Aesthetic Crown Lengthening:
Lasers can precisely reshape gum tissue to expose healthy tooth structure and improve the appearance of a gummy display.
Teeth Whitening:
Quality low intensity soft tissue lasers are outfitted with special attachments that can be used to speed up the lightening process.
TMJ Pain:
Myofascial pain, TMD symptoms, jaw stiffness & earaches. Reduce pain & inflammation with LLLT.
