Waterkeepers Carolina
A confederation of NC RIVERKEEPERS® who dedicate themselves to guarding and improving our water and
Guardians of our water and health from the mountains to the sea.
Contact your elected officials and tell them fix the 2023 Farm Bill to provide protections for wetlands!! We need these vital resources to mitigate flooding, filter our drinking water, and provide home to thousands of species!
Welcome to What's in Your Dry Bag, where we show you what our River and Waterkeepers need out in the field! Let us know if you have any questions about what all that equipment is 🤔 and what you want to see your share with you about their job!!
Coastal NC isn't just beaches and sand dunes, it's also wading through the salt marshes and traversing freshwater streams. Here is what Riley needs in the White Oak River Basin: YSI water quality meter, disposable gloves, sample bottles, lab sheets, notes, pens and markers, plankton tow net (her favorite item), GPS, towel, water bottle, bug spray, binoculars and field camera all in a sneaky camo backback.
Not pictured are the waders, hat and sunglasses that she's usually wearing!
We’re thrilled to be a recipient of ’s 2023 grant. Waterkeepers Carolina is thrilled to join others in improving water quality and fighting climate change with our initiatives! Thank you!

We couldn't be prouder of Patrick as he moves on to a new gig, along with his recently-received Master's degree! Patrick has been with CFRW for about 8 years—beginning as the boathouse attendant and also managing cleanups and building up our Creekwatchers program, and ending up as the Field Research Manager where he worked closely with Kemp on monitoring hog and poultry facilities through mapping, water quality sampling, and the Swim Guide, over-flights and so much more. He has been instrumental in work to get DEQ to issue notices of violations on several facilities and has recently used his skills in GIS to support our PFAS work. He was also our resident drone pilot helping to monitor easements and get other useful footage from the skies. He has brought so much joy and support to CFRW throughout his tenure and we will miss his perpetual graciousness, cheer, and all-around good nature. Thank you, Patrick. Congratulations! And, we will miss you!
📣✨We need auction items for our Oyster Roast this weekend!✨

The Cape Fear River Basin is home to many more hidden gems than just the oldest bald cypress tree, the only coquina rocks in NC, and those *adorable* alligators, so go explore for yourself!
These little guys keep our waters clean but they also need clean water to thrive! They are only present in three river systems now: Little Tennessee River Basin, French Broad River Basin, and the Nolichucky River Basin.
Swallow-tailed kites, Pygmy Sunfish, and Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers are just a few of the species in the Waccamaw River Basin that are under threat. Habitat destruction from deforestation and development are the primary concern for these little guys!
Only 20 minutes from High Shoals Falls, Pot Branch is a secluded and peaceful waterfall worth the hike!
