Just in: A new Georgia Research Alliance - GRA Eminent Scholar has been named to lead Georgia’s Solve Sickle Cell Initiative. Solomon Ofori-Acquah will have a joint appointment at Emory University and Morehouse School of Medicine; Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and GRA are also partners in the initiative.

As the Calvin Smyre Chair for Sickle Cell Research, Ofori-Acquah will spearhead a multi-disciplinary effort to break new ground in knowledge, treatment and cures for the disease.

The Satcher Health Leadership Institute (SHLI) at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) and the Southern AIDS Coalition successfully co-hosted the first-ever “Walk in Her Shoes” event on the MSM campus.

The event featured powerful discussions from stakeholders, policymakers, and healthcare experts, who highlighted the enduring strength and courage of Black women as they navigate decades-long challenges in accessing equitable HIV/AIDS testing, treatment, ongoing care, and data equity.

The “Walk in Her Shoes” event is a key component of Morehouse School of Medicine SHLI’s Georgia Thrives campaign and End the Epidemic Initiative (EHE), funded by Gilead Sciences . EHE examines the health equity implications of health systems, policy, and data gaps for people living with HIV.

🎉 We are thrilled to announce the graduation of our first cohort of Perinatal Patient Navigators from Morehouse School of Medicine!

These rural doulas have undergone over five months of rigorous training and are now ready to serve pregnant and postpartum patients in southwest Georgia. Their mission is to provide crucial education, guidance through the healthcare system, and emotional support throughout the pregnancy and childbirth journey.

This program is part of a national movement to utilize doulas to combat maternal mortality and improve maternal health outcomes, especially for Black women and other women of color.

Morehouse School of Medicine is proud to share that President & CEO Dr. MSM President Valerie Montgomery Rice celebrates Geovax, Inc. 's $350M+ federal grant.

“Receiving this federal grant is a monumental achievement for GeoVax and a significant step forward in our collective fight against infectious diseases […] As a special advisor to GeoVax's Chairman and Board of Directors, I have witnessed firsthand the dedication and innovation driving their work. GEO-CM04S1 has the potential to revolutionize vaccine accessibility and effectiveness, particularly for medically underserved communities and immunocompromised individuals,” says Dr. Montgomery Rice.

This funding will support the development of a next-gen COVID-19 vaccine, a crucial step in our mission to achieve health equity and protect vulnerable communities.
