On Saturday during the Beef Cattle Show at the Greater Jefferson County Fair - Iowa, the Carcass Challenge winners were announced‼️

4-H and FFA members participated in a beef carcass scan the Saturday before the fair. The scan provides valuable information to cattle producers, such as predicting lean meat yield, marbling, and USDA yield and quality grades. The Jefferson County Cattlemen put this event on for 4H and FFA members.

In addition to the Carcass Challenge, those that participated in the Facebook weekly Beef giveaways and the daily radio beef questions were put into a drawling for a Beef Bundle donated by the Jefferson County Cattlemen. Jeri Crile was the winner of the Beef Giveaway‼️

Beef is a great source of energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals. A single three-ounce serving of lean beef provides the consumer with 10 essential nutrients and 25 grams of protein all packed into a delicious meal! Protein is a necessary nutrient in developing strong bodies at all ages - from infants, teen athletes, and the elderly. Unfortunately, food-insecure families have limited access to protein-packed foods and lack the needed nutrients to grow strong bodies.

The Jefferson County Cattlemen’s Association recognized the gap in protein-rich foods available to local food-insecure families. The group decided to bridge the gap by donating $1,000 in canned beef during the May Beef Month from Ulrich’s Meat Market (Pella, IA) to the The Lord's Cupboard of Jefferson County in Fairfield, IA. Canned meat products are easier for families to store and for young children to enjoy since most products can be warmed up in small electronic appliances rather than using a stove or oven.

Beef's Role in the Environment

Don't be fooled by gimmicks and tunes, only 2% of U.S. GHG emissions come directly from beef cattle.

Not to mention, cattle flourish where crops fail. Approximately 29% of land in the US is too rocky, steep and arid to grow crops, but cattle can graze this land.

Cattle are also "upcyclers" in our food system. They upgrade human inedible materials and food waste into high-quality protein.

Myth: Cattle are one of the leading sources of greenhouse gas emissions and should be eliminated from our diets.

Fact: U.S. beef has one of the lowest carbon footprints in the world. If all livestock in the U.S. were eliminated and every American followed a vegan diet, greenhouse gas emissions would only be reduced by 2.6%, or 0.36% globally.

Elimination ≠ Solution
