Hanging with dear friends Ian and Andrew Walesch in Phoenix seeing a nonstop cavalcade of jazz stars. We started at MIM seeing Brad Mehldau followed up the next day by hanging with George Benson then went to see Kenny Barron, Christian McBride and Lewis Nash at “the Nash”... Now we’re heading to Vegas to go see Ronnie Foster.

This highly inventive ensemble was originally comprised of pianist Peter Schimke (who came up with the name), guitarist Dean Granros, bassist Billy Peterson, and drummer Kenny Horst. Sunday's lineup will pay tribute to Peter with Will Kjeer on piano.

The band affectionately referred to as "PHQ" by fans released Subduction: Live At The Artist's Quarter, in 2005, which was subsequently named Best Jazz CD of the Year by the Twin Cities alternative weekly newspaper City Pages. City Pages also named Phil Hey 2006 Jazz Musician of the Year.

Saxophonist Dave Brattain is a 20+-year veteran of the Cedar Avenue Big Band and Vanguard Variety Ensemble and a regular at all three AQ locations. Known as a versatile performer with "a huge fat sound", Dave has toured the U.S. with Troupe America (1940s Radio Hour) and been featured with pianist Ben Sidran.

Billy Peterson is one of the premier, most celebrated bass players in the world. His uncompromising talents as a performer have brought him widespread recognition, as well as his plenty credits as a composer, arranger and producer. Peterson´s contributions to the music scene are inestimable and his imagination and boundless enthusiasm behind the bass are singular and stunning. Peterson was a member of the Steve Miller Band for 23 years, toured Europe and Japan with Ben Sidran and worked on numerous recordings of other artists, including Georgie Fame and Phil Upchurch. His many awards are too many to list here but include the Grammy Hall of Fame Award – Induction of Bob Dylan's album "Blood on the Tracks", 2008 - Mid-American Music Hall of Fame – Induction Award, as a member of “The Peterson Family”, and a 2007 - Ancient City Blues Society – Honorary Lifetime Membership
Kenny Horst is “simply one of the finest jazz drummers to ever call Minnesota home” and has garnered a reputation of excellence in recognizing and booking upcoming and established talent while running one of the most beloved jazz clubs in the Midwest. Throughout his career, Kenny has played with luminaries like Ira Sullivan, Lee Konitz, David Hazeltine, Eric Alexander, Bob Rockwell, Bill Carrothers, Ben Sidran, Bucky Pizzarelli, Herb Ellis, Charlie Byrd, Herb Ellis, Charles McPherson, Tal Farlow, Clark Terry, Slide Hampton, Joanne Brackeen, Jim Rotondi, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Jimmy McGriff, Cedar Walton, and Barney Kessel, among others. This “Black Drummer of the Year” from the 1969 Jackie Awards solidified his legacy of jazz with a 40-year run of the Artists' Quarter, a place that Downbeat magazine added to its list of “100 Great Jazz Clubs” in the world.
Will Kjeer is a Pianist and Composer who has shared the stage with world-class performers including Dave King, Jerry Bergonzi, Adam Nussbaum, and many more. Having cut his teeth in Los Angeles as well as his hometown of Minneapolis, MN, Will has been widely regarded in each city as a firebrand, a first-call, and a must-hear. Will is currently finishing a M.M. in Jazz Piano from The Juilliard School and always thrilled to be back playing in the Twin Cities with friends and family.
