“Black Panther” is making history at the 2019 Academy Awards.
The superhero film yesterday became the first of the Marvel franchise to win one of the coveted Oscar trophies, as Ruth E. Carter accepted the award for Best Costume Design.
To really nail the movie's visual style, Carter and her team were encouraged by the director Ryan Coogler to take a deep dive into African culture. For instance, the costumes worn by the Dora Milaje (Wakanda's answer to the Secret Service) were inspired by the fashions of mixed African cultures.
Carter herself also made Oscars history, becoming the first African-American woman to receive the Best Costume Design award.

PILLS OF STAGE COSTUME'S HISTORY

Alexandre Benois was one of the greatest protagonist of Diaghilev’s ballets. His most famous production is Petrushka (1911, ThĂ©Ăątre du ChĂątelet), set to the music of Igor Stravinsky, with themes and motifs from Russian folklore: ‘under a cobalt blue sky and in front of a citron yellow barn, for the common people in the ballet corps I envisioned clothing with faded tones – sand-blue, rust-coloured, earthen and olive drab – to provide a stark contrast to the clothing of the three puppets: Karsavina in a white dress with red and blue hems, Nijinsky in a white, large-necked tunic with orange hems over trousers with cedar green and orange lozenges, and Orlov in a green and silver tunic with cobalt blue sleeves over large orange trousers and green boots, and a green and silver turban adorned with a scintillating white and silver feather’.

THEATER AND HAUTE COUTURE

1965
Notre-Dame de Paris

Ballet first presented on December 11, 1965 at the Palais Garnier (Paris)
Choregrapher: Roland Petit
Costumes: Yves Saint Laurent
Set Design: René Allio
Music: Maurice Jarre

"When Roland Petit and I were working on Notre-Dame de Paris, we never dreamed that this ballet would still be performed at the OpĂ©ra de Paris thirty years later. It was a success as soon as it was created, and today it is a classic, at once in terms of modernity, invention, and imagination. I wanted the costumes to have the same colors as the cathedral’s stained glass windows, and I drew on Mondrian for Phoebus’s costume. I tried to reflect the timeless youthfulness of the choreography. I was inspired by the courtroom judges, the shady movements of the Court of Miracles, Frollo’s distress, Quasimodo’s moving tenderness, like a fresco from the Middle Ages".

Yves Saint Laurent, September 1996.

Bernardo Bertolucci has died this morning at his home in Rome. He was 77

“The Last Emperor,” an adaptation of the autobiography of China’s last imperial ruler, Pu Yi, swept the 1987 Oscars, winning every category in which it had been nominated, including best picture, best costume design and best art direction. With it, Bertolucci became the first and only Italian to win the Oscar for best director.
“The Last Emperor” is among the movies that have won the most Academy Awards and was also the first Western epic about China made with the Chinese government’s cooperation.

“The Costume Designer gives the clothes to the actor, the actor gives the character to the director, and the director tells the story” (Deborah Nadoolman Landis)

Deborah has created iconic costumes throughout her career, such as the fedora and jacket of Indiana Jones, the "college" sweatshirt worn by John "Bluto" Blutarsky, and Michael Jackson's red jacket in Thriller. In addition to many Drama-Logue Awards for her theater designs, she was nominated for an Academy Award in 1988 for Coming to America.

COSTUMES FOR OSCAR
Casanova
Director: Federico Fellini
Costume designer: Danilo Donati

Gilet in taffetà cangiante rosa. Pantalone moiré rosa. Jabot e cadute ai polsi in pizzi argento e nastri di raso rosa.
