EveryDay Learners

EveryDay Learners is a United Way of Utah County initiative that encourages residents of Utah County to make education a top priority in our community!

Our vision for the children of Utah County is that our children are proficient readers by the third-grade. This way, they will be four times more likely to graduate high school than students who cannot read at a third-grade level. We want everyone to be an EveryDay Learner because we need to work together in our communities to teach every child to read. Be sure to connect with us on Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram! @EveryDay_Learn

Harold and the Purple Crayon: An oldie but a goodie!

This book is such a fun way for kids to learn about creativity! If your kid is really interesting in art and drawing, this would be a great book for them.

During the month of March, EveryDay Learners celebrated United Way's 60th Anniversary and Dr. Seuss's Birthday 🎉

EveryDay Learners gifted a Dr. Seuss book to each United Way of Utah County Employee for them to donate, where they saw a need, in their community. These books are now scattered throughout Utah County making families smile!

Our employees donated their books to teachers, lending libraries, family, friends, partner agencies and children they work with 😃 We love our employees and their drive to support the families in our community!

Did you know? Most kids start reading around age 6 or 7.

Sometimes you might feel pressure as a parent for your child to be reading as early as age 4 or 5. Just remember that it is totally normal if your child takes a little bit longer to start reading! Letting them go at their own pace can be a great way for your child to gain confidence in their ability to read on their own.

Learning Milestones to look for in your 12 month old!

1. Can your baby plate at least one nursery game when prompted? Examples include peeka-boo and clap your hands.
2. Can your baby say at least three words such as mama or dada?
3. When you ask your baby where a simple object is, do they look towards it?
4. Can your baby find things that they watch you hide? For example, try hiding a toy under a blanket and see if they can find it.
5. Does your baby drop smaller toys into a bigger box after you show the how to do it?

It is so fun to see babies start to do and learn new things!

If you are concerned that your baby is not developing at the right pace, consider calling the number 211 to get connected with a child development specialist!

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Dr. Seuss, born Theodore Seuss Geisel, wrote more than 60 children's books, including Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Green Eggs and Ham.
Dr. Seuss books can help your child learn core vocabulary and learn new words!

Fun fact: Dr. Seuss invented the word "nerd"!

Perhaps the best way to teach our children to love books is to model such an attitude towards reading. 📚

Whether you love reading or not, we recommend following on Instagram! Janssen Bradshaw shares tips for prioritizing reading, books for kids and adults to enjoy, and more. She hosts a reading club which reads a book each month and discusses it each week on her stories.

Her goal is to share her love of reading and help you find books you will love as well!

As your children work towards their New Year's Resolutions this year, be patient with them and give them room to make mistakes and problem solve.

One of United Way's other initiatives, EveryDay Strong, teaches parents how to help children feel safe to fail.

Remember that failure is a part of being human. Making mistakes gives a child an opportunity to learn and grow! Expect growth, not perfection, and teach your child to do the same. It is important that your child feels that you believe in them, even when they don't succeed.

For more tips on helping your child feel safe to fail, watch EveryDay Strong's video at the link below!

For children and adults alike, the hardest part about New Year's Resolutions is following through. Because your child is learning, they will need you to follow up with them. Here are some tips from the Parents website:

- Don't bribe your kids! You want them to be intrinsically motivated rather than extrinsically motivated for this. Some examples of intrinsic motivation are personal satisfaction, independence, purpose, mastery, self esteem, and joy.
- Expect lapses! There will be times where your child will forget or things will get in the way. Don't label that as failure- recognize it as trying.
- Don't nag. Your child should want to work towards their goals and no one likes to be pestered. Consider hanging their vision board and their goals somewhere that they will see it daily. Ask questions about how things are going and encourage them to keep trying.
- Be flexible. Your child may come across some difficulties and they may need help changing their strategy or adjusting their goal.

Stay tuned to learn how you can help your child if they fail or are not progressing in their goals!

Now that your child has created a vision board, you can use that to begin making tangible goals and plan to attain them!

These goals should be SMART- Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. They can make a SMART goal for each thing on their vision board!

Make sure to allow your child to choose their own goals. You are there to guide and assist them, not tell them what they should do. Keep it to 3-5 goals, depending on age and interest. If their goals aren't attainable, help them make changes so it is attainable.

Print the SMART goal worksheet at the link below.

A great way to get your kids excited about making New Year's Resolutions is to start with a fun activity, like making a vision board.

Get some old magazines, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooking supplies together and let your child pick some things that interest them. Encourage them to think of things they want to do and accomplish this year. Have them include hobbies, educational, spiritual, social, financial, and/or fitness goals. If they want to learn to play a new instrument, help them find a photo or print a photo of that instrument (or someone they admire playing that instrument).

Did you know that, with help, kids can make their own New Year's Resolutions?

According to a Deseret News article (linked below), making and working on resolutions helps kids:
- Decide what they’d like to change.
- Feel more control over their future.
- Talk to parents about goals and what they’d like more or less of in their lives.
- Organize both thoughts and actions.
- Learn to break tasks down to achieve big goals.

We want to express our continuous gratitude for Thanksgiving Point! They do so much for United Way and our EveryDay Learners initiative.

Last week, our playgroup families were able to attend the Museum of Natural Curiosity and see the Daniel Tiger exhibit. Not only did they get to learn about water, weather, music, and more- they also got to take a trip through Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood!

Everyone had a great time, and we are thankful to Thanksgiving Point for giving us this opportunity, among many others! 💖✨

At Ready To Learn today, Welcome Baby VISTA, Anya Leishman, taught parents about the benefits of media and how to use the Learning Triangle.

This is when one uses media, books, and activities together in order to teach a child a concept.

Each Ready To Learn class follows this format as we share videos, provide books, and hand out activities related to what we are teaching.

Go to the Welcome Baby website to RSVP for next month’s Ready To Learn class, or watch them on the Welcome Baby page!

We love the idea of collapsing the play triangle as described by Jeff Guenzel!

Playing directly with your child provides an opportunity for bonding and communication! Next time you recognize that you are in a play triangle, try collapsing it!
