I NEVER thought that I would attend a mega church. I grew up in a mid sized church. 500 on a PACKED Sunday. And later, I’d be on staff at the same church.

Nobody likes to talk about this, but there’s a mindset that congregants and even leaders of smaller churches have about mega churches. I know because I lowkey had the same mindset. Most of the time, it’s never said outright. But it’s definitely implied that these huge churches aren’t doing something right. “They’re attracting people because they’re not teaching the true gospel.” “They’re all about performance and they don’t let the Holy Spirit flow.” Stuff like that.

All of the assumptions I held were based on the idea that they were doing something wrong instead of asking myself “what are they doing right?” It’s wild that, while I judged mega churches about their size, I would celebrate when my departments grew in number. The double standard was wild.

My family and I basically landed here by accident one Sunday. I mean, it wasn’t really an accident because it was definitely in God’s plan. But we didn’t leave to seek out a mega church. We showed up that first Sunday to hide out… but that didn’t work out too well. Then God slowly began to use this church to unravel my unspoken ideas about mega churches. And with that, I also began to have a heart change about God’s people in mega churches. I realized that none of us are perfect, and we’re all just trying to serve God in the best way that we can. And if I’m open to it, God can use different expressions of the body to make me more like Him. In His sovereignty, He has used Community Bible Church to heal and grow our family over the last five years. I’m forever grateful.

People are so used to leaders having hidden agendas and motives… it’s almost like they’re extra suspicious when you don’t have one.

I’m the husband to an amazing wife. I’m the father to some amazing daughters. God has given me the responsibility to fully empower them as they know God and make Him known.
If they are co-heirs with Christ, then they aren’t second class citizens in the kingdom. Rise, ladies.

Long post: My thoughts on the Mike Bickle allegations and the Church.

Mike Bickle is the founder of the International House of Prayer in Kansas City. He is being accused of sexual misconduct over the course of his ministry. To make it worse, this was all happening while he is married. The allegations seem very credible. It’s heartbreaking for multiple reasons.

1. It’s sad to think about the potential victims in this situation. I can only imagine the trauma associated with it. Not to mention how they view God, spiritual leaders, power… everything is now seen through a shattered lens. Their lives and their relationships are severely damaged. By another man of God. It makes me sad and angry.

2. It’s a sad day for the kingdom. No matter what you think about IHOPKC, they have clearly been anointed by God to share a revelation of prayer & worship with the Church. They have both planted and inspired houses of prayer throughout the nations. They boldly embrace the fullness of who Jesus is. They are a part of the body of Christ, and they have been severely injured. And that means that we all have been severely injured.

Here is what I’ve been sensing about this situation lately…

If true, these things have already happened and they are just now being uncovered on a national scale. Why? I believe there are two reasons.

1. God reveals before He heals. Rev 3:17-19
Sometimes we think we’re good until stuff gets revealed and we finally realize where we need healing. The Church needs to be healed from severe spiritual abuse by its leaders. And leaders need to be healed from many things - including the unbiblical leadership structures and understandings that we’ve put in place which allows this stuff to thrive. It’s also something that man isn’t designed to operate in. God is showing us our sickness and inviting us into healing.

2. Satan always tries to abort/discredit a coming move of God. The world wants to experience the power of God. So what happens? Religious scholars come out with a movie telling the Church that spiritual gifts are no longer for today… and then one of the most prominent ministries that fully embrace spiritual gifts gets exposed for ungodliness. Meanwhile the world is becoming more and more entertained and obsessed with the occult. The enemy is trying it.

Now here’s what I believe is going to happen in the Church over the next few years: the term “We (people) are the Church” is about to be a fully embraced reality. A revival is coming and will be led by ordinary people filled with the Holy Spirit. They will move in the prophetic, gifts of healing, and everything else. A reformation is also coming to the Church. Many churches will close or will be irrelevant because they want to hold on to old power structures while refusing to empower their people. People will leave churches that operate as entertainment centers and will flock to churches (and people/organizations) that operate as empowerment centers. Leaders, get ready. Get set up for community and hands on training. Test this word.

These situations are always painful. It’s ugly. We’ve sinned and we need to repent so that
God can heal us. But in this, we are also reminded that the Church belongs to God. He started it and no person can stop it. And he disciplines us because He loves us. Be humble, Church. And be strong. Endure the discipline so that we can share in His holiness and righteousness.

Truth.
