It's race day at Hickory!
Jerry Bryant wins the Anderson trophy for Stock V8 in his Chevelle while Jerry DeHart brings home the Inline 6 trophy in his Mustang Sat. Sept 30th. Thanks to Keith Anderson Photography for the Victory Lane images and check out all his images.
With 3 separate spins among 3 different competitors, we waited on the official order of finish to bring out the full rundown. It had to be the longest race (time) we have had all year due to the cautions and spins and one stopped on the track. Happy to report there was minimum damage to our real steel cars, but all important due to the close season points chase. With these results, the Inline 6 class lead is separated by a single point and the V8 points lead is by 3 points. Another tie has formed for 5th in the V8 class between Danny Toney and Tim Stokes. We can't wait till October 21st when the CVR cars unload at Hickory Motor Speedway for our last scheduled race of 2023.
And the winners are: Jerry and Jerry. Jerry Bryant takes the overall and V8 win in his Chevelle with Jerry DeHart picking up the inline 6 win in the Mustang. It was a wild nite at Anderson.
CVR cars are waiting for their feature here at Anderson Motor Speedway. 11 sheet metal vintage cars are ready to go. Meet and greet at 6:30, racing starts at 7pm. Come on out.

We have two ties for both classes with two races to go in the 2023 season points standings. Below are the members only, eligible to race in the next two events, to determine the CVR championship.

2. 44 Duffie Sams, V8, '51 Ford Coupe
3. 28 Doug Howell, V8, '65 Chevelle
4. 24 Kristi Peacock, Inline 6 winner. '70 Duster
5. 98 Howard Scruggs, Inline 6, '51 Hudson Hornet
6. 61 Marty Reid, V8 '65 Falcon (engine quit during pace laps)
DNS 22 Don Krietemeyer, V8, '64 Buick Riveria (engine broke during practice)
DNS 3 Jesse Martin, V8, '71 Camaro (engine broke during practice)
Practice under some beautiful skies lead to most competitors taking advantage of the wide track and cooler temperatures. Two guys had misfortune when their engines let go and their night was done early. Six cars lined up for the 25 lap feature 2nd on the schedule. Marty's fast Falcon quit running during pace laps and had to be pushed off to the pits. The rest took off with a battle for the lead between Duffie Sams and Danny Toney. Kristi Peacock stayed in front of Howard Scruggs from the start for the battle between the inline sixes. Danny Toney had the lead when the rain started getting heavier and at lap 16, Timmy Hutson, flagman, gave out the yellow and checkerd flag. Kristi Peacock grabbed her 2nd win at LPMP in her Duster ahead of Howard Scruggs for the inline 6 tie in season points with two races to go. The V8 season points can't get any closer with just two more races on the schedule with Doug Howell and Marty Reid tied at 188 points with 3rd place Jesse Martin at 171. Who knows what will happen when the CVR cars unload at the next event.
The rain would not let up. So the other races on the night did not get to run. The SEST series is working to replace those races with a new date.
9-12-23 Update: Added another event on Sept 30th, at Anderson Motor Speedway. So 2 races remain on the schedule The other is Hickory Oct. 21st.
Let's all head to Coeburn for an action packed Saturday night.

Sad News
Our friend, Roger Sams, former CVR member and racer has gone to be with the Lord, Wednesday night 8-23-23. Having retired from law enforcement and living in Bostic, NC near the Golden Valley area, Roger joined the Carolina Vintage Racers club with the encouragement of his brother, Raymond. To satisfy his need for speed, Roger put together a '55 Bel Air and had to paint and letter it to remember a talented short track racer of the '60's from the Golden Valley of NC, Preston Humphries. Roger loved racing with the club and even captured the 2017 Stock V8 class Championship. Only two years ago, Roger sold his beloved Golden Valley Road Runner, claiming that due to declining health, he wasn't able to do it anymore. Roger had heart issues and recently contracted pneumonia and was at the Spartanburg Hospital at the time of his passing. We will miss Roger both on and off the track. Please send your prayers to the Sams family at this time. Roll on #77.

Standing in line in the heat to ride 3 rides, after paying what feels like $500k just doesn't seem like happiness to us. A day at the track, yes please!!

25 lap feature CVR Race #5, Sat. evening, Aug. 5th, 2023 Official Finish Results
1. #7 Tim Stokes '69 Camaro V8 winner
2. #51 Danny Toney V8 '65 Chevelle
3. #61 Marty Reid V8 '64 Falcon
4. #28 Doug Howell V8 '65 Chevelle
5. #44 Duffie Sams V8 '51 Ford Sedan
6. #98 Howard Scruggs Inline 6 winner '51 Hudson Hornet
7. #24 Kristi Peacock Inline 6 '70 Duster (DNF-flat tire)
DNS. #3 Jesse Martin V8 '71 Camaro (broke rear end gear during practice)
One caution at lap 2 slowed the field when last place starter Tim Stokes spun into the inside back straight wall when he braked hard to avoid Howard Scruggs Hornet. After a lengthy caution, Tim was able to duct to his pitcrew for left fender tire clearance, and joined the restart at the back once again. Duffie Sams's Ford leads until Danny Toney puts his white Chevelle out front. Marty Reid gets around Duffie for 2nd. Meanwhile, Tim has been making laps to evaluate his damaged Camaro, then starts picking off cars one at a time til he makes his move around Danny for the lead. Kristi Peacock goes to the infield with a flat right front tire which paved the way for Howard Scruggs's Hornet to capture the inline 6 trophy. As the white flag was displayed, Doug Howell dove low under Duffie for 4th and held on to the checkers after many laps of working his outside. Points leader Jesse Martin was so disappointed after practice when he sheared his quick change gears and cracked the gear housing. Tim Stokes made trophy photos with his extended crew before the Anderson race in makeup of no photos at the rain shortened Hickory event, he had to get more victory lane photos after his second win of the season.

Marty Ward, just yesterday in victory lane.
Racing Family and Friends,
It is with heavy and saddened heart that we make this post.
Marty Ward of Marietta, South Carolina, multi Championship driver,
has passed surrounded by his family and friends on Sunday, August 6th.
Marty brought much fun and laughter to everyone he was around.
His stories brought back great memories for us all. Marty never
knew a stranger and made you feel like you had been friends since
childhood. He was a man of integrity and honor. And in true Marty fashion, he left us with that huge smile and a victory lane
flag in in hand, winning the very first race for the Southern Classic
Stock Car division. Marty will be greatly missed by his racing family
and friends.
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race,
I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4 :8
As we learn the arrangements from Marty's family, we will be posting those for anyone that would like to send their condolences to Marty's family. We would also like to ask for time and respect for Marty's family during this time.
We Love You and Will Miss You Marty! Fly High and God Speed Friend!

Event Results
Unofficial results of our first visit of 2023 at Hickory Motor Speedway. Some of the races of the night did not get to run due to a late shower that set in. The vintage drivers made the most of their sunshine to put on a tough 25 lap feature with a few sprinkles showing up on their windshields and a couple of spins with cautions. However, all continued, with only the Duster of Peacock ducting in the pits early. Tim Stokes came up through the pack of eleven cars to grab the lead from Don Kreitemeyer. A testament to a fine bunch of drivers was that the top 6 cars were all on the same straightaway at the finish. Local Hudson driver Jerry DeHart joined the vintage club last year, and had to hold off Howard Scruggs's Hornet to gain his first 6 cylinder win. Our next race is scheduled for Anderson Aug. 5th.

Marty Reid takes the V8 CVR win at Tri-County Speedway Saturday night with the closest finish of the night. Howard Scruggs took the inline 6 trophy with competitor Kristi Peacock dumping the inline 6 Chevy on the track from her Duster on lap 17 of the 25 lap feature. Photo from General Admission page.
Drivers, crew and fans, we have a new race at the fully repaved Tri-County Speedway this Saturday June 24th. See below for the raceday schedule with two practices and 20 lap feature for the Carolina Vintage Racers club. Come and try out the new pavement.
