Heat Exhaustion
Heat exhaustion is an effect of being exposed for prolonged periods of time to soaring temperatures outside and also by doing prolonged physical activity during such a period of Heat Wave.
Why Heat Exhaustion occurs?
Exposure to outside heat results in perspiration(sweating) which is a biological mechanism to lower body's temperature.
During sweating, electrolytes and salts like sodium, potassium are lost from the body. These salts are needed by the body especially the muscles to regulate contraction and relaxation of muscles.
When the rate of perspiration(fluid loss) exceeds the rate of water intake, heat exhaustion sets it and the symptoms manifest as,
-Headache
-Muscle cramps( especially in the legs and calves).
-Drop in blood pressure which can cause 'Fainting'.
-Fatigue and feeling tired to make movements( feeling of a need to sit in one place and rest).
-Changes in urine output and colour(dark).
Steps to overcome Heat Exhaustion:-
-Rehydrating the body by consuming coconut water, lemon juice which replenish the body salts
-Minimizing the exposure to Heat, shifting to a cooler place.
-Eating foods that cool the body like cucumbers, watermelons.
-Having proper rest till the symptoms subside.
