Simple explanation on how the vestibular system works. I always describe it as being our internal compass as to knowing where our body is -in space and time. It shares similar pathways in the brain with the visual and auditory systems. When these systems are out of sync-disorientation occurs. One of the outcomes -“Dyslexia.”

The term Disconnected Kids is a direct reference to a malfunction of the vestibular, or inner ear, system. The vestibular system is one of the main systems that helps children orient themselves in the earth’s gravitational pull. It helps them maintain proper posture and balance.

The vestibular system works closely with the visual and auditory systems to help with spatial awareness and movement.

A child who has an under active vestibular system will be kind of clumsy and may never seem to get dizzy when spinning.

A child with an overactive vestibular system gets dizzy easily. This is the child who gets motion sickness in the car.

'Autism is a “dynamic disability”. What this means is capacity & functioning are not concrete & may fluctuate dependent on factors such as environment, cognition, executive function, processing capacity, Interoception/exteroception, neuro-fatigue, anxiety, communication differences, burnout & sensory overwhelm. This means Autistics may be capable of a task one day, but unable to perform the task at another.'

Saw this the other day. Made me laugh. The instruction is: “Copy the Reindeer.” It reminds me of the times when I get confused by a written instruction or by a verbal instruction.

20 years ago I read “The Gift of Dyslexia” by Ron Davis. It made me question the meaning of dyslexia.
