CSC Craftsperson Technical Award of Merit - 2023
It was an honour to be chosen by the Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC) as the recipient of the 2023 Craftsperson Technical Award of Merit. It acknowledges outstanding contribution to the collaborative craft of cinematography.
"Your exceptional work as a highly skilled artist/craftsperson DIT, along with the dedication, passion and excellent communication skills you bring to the craft helped make you the unanimous choice" (CSC, 2023).
It's been exciting to introduce the same skill set and tools I use grading in post to the onset collaboration with the cinematographer and crew. The immediacy of the interaction is quite inspiring as well as powerful: it lends itself to creative ingenuity.
A long career loaded with many twists and turns in many markets. The most brilliant part was experiencing the world through the film industry. Getting to know the world not only on a geo-political level, but through the outstanding and talented people who shared their regions' stories as we worked on their pictures. A world-class education!
The state of the art in image capture and creative manipulation has evolved at a break-neck speeds. From film, telecine and millions of dollars invested in the best post-production rooms to the ability to be on-set and mostly do the same thing at a fraction of the cost is revolutionary. I can't say that I don't miss sitting in a dark room, keeping an eye on rolls of film threading through the telecine scanner while we chatted and work on the images... the depth, the physical touch, the photochemical aspect. And yet, the immediacy of the on-set process brings different challenges and many new rewards.
And so this award is meaningful to me for so many obvious and unseen reasons: the exceptional world class cinematographers, directors and people I have met and worked with; challenging myself to orient to different cultures for long-term contracts over almost 20 years of travel; continuously adapting to new technologies; being a woman in tech had its own obstacles but never in the markets one would have assumed; developing one's character, strength and perception and learning to see the world through unique colours with hope and action and life-long learning. Grateful for the entire experience.
