This beautiful gold-coated gurudwara (temple) in Amritsar is the most sacred place for Sikhs. It’s both the spiritual and temporal centre of the religion, and thousands of pilgrims, tourists, and followers arrive daily to worship, pray, volunteer, and soak up the peaceful vibes. With that many visitors, it's unsurprising that the kitchens are huge, and the portions needed to keep things running massive—the kitchen uses 12,000 kilograms of flour, 1,600 kilograms of pulses (lentils), 1,600 kilograms of vegetables, and 1,400 kilograms of rice per day. About 25 percent of the food is donated.

"Jasjeet is the apple of our eyes. When we learnt that she had Downs Syndrome, it felt as if the ground had fallen away from beneath our feet", Amarjit Singh Anand tells the Tribune, remembering the time when he got to know that his daughter was diagnosed with the disease.

Amarjit winded up his business and dedicated his life towards working for people suffering from Down’s syndrome.

Around 10 years after his daughter was born, he opened Punjab’s first parents’ association for such people called “Chanan”.

“The only motive behind opening a centre was to provide these kids with a home where they can stay even if we are not alive. They will at least be having this centre where they will be taken care of,” he says.

Today, 'Chanan' has become a movement with 16 associations in Punjab and many more across Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and UP.

From fighting the stigma and making policies accessible to providing medical care to disabled kids stuck at home during the pandemic, Amarjit continues to work tirelessly to help the disabled community of Punjab.

In 1955, the Government of India invaded the Harimandar Sahib Complex, and two people died in that attack. The 1984 attack, labeled Operation Blue Star by the Indian government, marked the assault that caused the sixth most amount of destruction. The Complex faced two additional attacks in 1986 and 1988 by the Indian government. Across centuries, Sikhs have unwaveringly defended Harimandar Sahib with their blood, consistently rebuilding after each assault and preserving their identity and history. ਜੀਵਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਓਸ਼ੋ, ਪੇਰੀਆਰ ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਬਾਬੂ ਕਾਂਸ਼ੀ ਰਾਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਿਖਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਨਾਲ਼ ਜਾਣੂ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਮਾਰਗ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਖਿੱਤੇ ਦੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਨੀਵੇਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਮਾਰਗ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਸਨ।

ਜਨਵਰੀ 2023 ਨੂੰ ਪੀਟਰ ਫ੍ਰੈਡਰਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਭਜਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ‘ਕੈਪਟੀਵੇਟਿੰਗ ਦਾ ਸਿੰਪਲ ਹਾਰਟਡ’ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ ਯਕੀਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।

ਉਹਨੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਕਦਮ ਪੁੱਟਿਆ ਤੇ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਪਟਨਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਖੇ ਦਸਤਾਰ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਲਈ, ਜਿਸਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਉਸੇ ਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਅਪਣੇ ਕੇਸ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਦੇ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਇਕ ਨਿੱਕੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਰਸਮ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ਼ ਵੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

ਉਹਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਰਾਏਪੁਰ, ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਹੁਸ਼ਿਆਰਪੁਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਘੋੜੇ 'ਤੇ ਸਵਾਰ ਕੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਘੁਮਾ ਕੇ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਦਲਿਤ ਤਾਮਿਲ ਨੂੰ ਅਪਣਾ ਮੰਨ ਕੇ ਸਤਿਕਾਰਿਆ - ਜੀਵਨ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਵਿਚ ਤਬਦੀਲ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲ਼ਾ ਪਲ ਸੀ, ਉਹ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗ ਚੁੱਕਿਆ ਸੀ।

ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਵਾਦੀ ਜਾਤਪਾਤ ਨਿਜ਼ਾਮ ਮੁਤਾਬਿਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਤਾਮਿਲ ਦਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਉਸ ਜਾਤ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹੈ , ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਲੱਗਣ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਭਿੱਟੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ । ਇਹ ਆਦਮੀ ਜੋ ਅਛੂਤ ਵਰਗ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਸੀ - ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਪੱਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਹਿਨ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿਓਂਕਿ ਪੱਗ ਇਕ ਤਾਜ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੁਸੱਤਾ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਘੋੜੇ ਦੀ ਸਵਾਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਅਤੇ ਉੱਚ ਵਰਗ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਹਿੰਦੂ-ਮੰਦਰ (ਜਿਸ ਧਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ) ਵਿਚ ਦਾਖ਼ਲ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਅੱਜ ਇਕ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਦਸਤਾਰ ਸਜਾ ਕੇ ਘੋੜੇ 'ਤੇ ਸਵਾਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਲੁੱਟ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ।

ਇਸਾਈ ਧਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਡੇ ਹੋਣ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਓਹਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਤਾਕਤਵਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਇੱਥੇ, ਫਿਜ਼ਾ ਹੀ ਵੱਖਰੀ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸੀ - ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ।
ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚ, ਇਹਨੇ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਧੀਨਗੀ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਉਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਹੁਸ਼ਿਆਰਪੁਰ ਦੀ ਵਿਰਾਸਤ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਿਆ - ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੁਸ਼ਿਆਰਪੁਰ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦ੍ਰਾਵਿੜ ਸਭਿਅਤਾ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਫਿਰ 1932 ਵਿਚ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੋਹਨਦਾਸ ਗਾਂਧੀ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਦੱਬੇ-ਕੁਚਲੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਰਾਖਵੇਂਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਿਲਾਫ਼ ਮਰਨ ਵਰਤ 'ਤੇ ਬੈਠੇ ਸਨ, ਇਸ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੇ ਬਾਬੂ ਮੰਗੂ ਰਾਮ ਗਾਂਧੀ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਿਲਾਫ਼ ਮਰਨ ਵਰਤ 'ਤੇ ਬੈਠੇ ਸਨ।

ਇਹ ਉਹ ਥਾਂ ਹੈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਦੱਬੇ-ਕੁਚਲੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਲਈ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਸਿਆਸੀ ਸੋਚ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਈ ਅਤੇ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਪੰਜ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਬਾਅਦ 1937 ਵਿਚ ਦਲਿਤ ਬਾਬੂ ਮੰਗੂ ਰਾਮ ਨੇ ਚੋਣ ਜਿੱਤੀ।

1996 ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਤਬਦੀਲੀ ਲਈ ਲੜਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਲਿਤ ਕਾਂਸ਼ੀ ਰਾਮ ਵੀ ਹੁਸ਼ਿਆਰਪੁਰ ਹਲਕੇ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਜਿੱਤੇ ਸਨ।

ਅਤੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਹੈ, ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਜੋ ਹਾਲੇ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਜੀਵਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਚੋਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਿੱਤ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਖਾਂ-ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਰੁਪਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਘਾਟ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਘੱਟ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਓਹਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਲੋਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ। ਪਰ ਉਹ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਤੇ 45 ਡਿਗਰੀ ਤਾਪਮਾਨ ਵਿਚ ਅਪਣੀ ਮੋਪਡ ਨਾਲ ਘਰ-ਘਰ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਕਈਆਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਜਿੱਤ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

ਉਹ ਲੋਕਾਈ ਦਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਨੀਵਿਆਂ ਦਾ। ਉਹ ਬੇਗ਼ਮਪੂਰਾ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਸੰਜੋ ਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਤੋਂ ਇਸ ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਦਾ ਮਨਸ਼ਾ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ - ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਹਕੂਮਤੀ ਜਬਰ ਦਾ ਹੱਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੋਚ ਨਾਲ਼ ਤੁਰਨਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ।

ਸੰਗਰੂਰ ਦੇ 8 ਸਾਲਾ ਅਨਾਥ ਜੁੜਵਾ ਬੱਚੀਆਂ ਖੁਸ਼ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅਤੇ ਅਮਨਦੀਪ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੋ। ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਆਉਣ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਛੱਡੇ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਾਦਾ-ਦਾਦੀ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ 60 ਸਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਉਮਰ ਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਾਦਾ ਜੀ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਪੰਚਰ ਦੀ ਦੁਕਾਨ ਚਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿਰਫ਼ $3-$4 ਕਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਰੰਮਤ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ। 🏚️
