DNS Exercise/Sport 1: Laying the foundation

JOIN US this February in Los Angeles at Movement Performance Institute. The location is insanely close to the beach and LAX!

To master anything you have to begin with a strong foundation. DNS Exercise 1 kicks off or refreshes your DNS journey by taking a deep dive into the foundation of all our movement: sagittal stabilization! Think trunk stabilization, core stabilization, it is all the same and it all relies upon our diaphragm doing its job!

When you understand how the respiratory and postural stabilization functions of the diaphragm drive good coordination and timing of the spinal stabilization system you will be able to recognize and train better stabilization function with your clients. It is the QUALITY of these functions that matter and that are necessary to effectively integrate sagittal stabilization into functional movement patterns. When you start to train or treat your clients in a way that repairs and builds their foundation instead of just covering up the cracks, your clients will notice and you will start seeing better outcomes.

Automatic motor patterns in our central nervous system drive our development during the first year of life taking us from dependent babies to upright walking humans. DNS is based on this Developmental Kinesiology. These patterns continue to influence our movement and often become impaired causing pain, strain and performance issues. By utilizing key developmental positions and exercises, we can retrain these motor patterns restoring joint and tissue integrity and strong functional movement.

DNS Ex 1 is for all movement professionals: PTs, DCs, ATCs, Personal Trainers, Pilates and Yoga practitioners and coaches.

Recently I was fortunate to be interviewed by Steven Sashen on The MOVEMENT Movement. Steven is so passionate about what he does so talking with him was enriching and so much fun.

Hope you check it out. Details and link are below.

Reposted• Today on with Steven Sashen: Erin McGuire PT, OCS, has been a physical therapist for over 25 years. Erin is a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, creator of the core360 belt and a Prague School of Rehabilitation Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) international instructor and practitioner. After more than 20 years at her private practice in Los Angeles, Back in Balance Physical Therapy, Erin recently moved her practice to Colorado where she will focus on teaching, the core360 belt and continuing to treat clients.

Listen to this episode of The MOVEMENT Movement with Erin McGuire about how you must breathe properly to move properly.

Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week’s show:
- How your trunk should expand 360 degrees when you inhale.
- How you need to use your diaphragm to breath sufficiently.
- Why breathing and core stability are one in the same.
- How it’s important for your body to learn good patterns you don’t have to think much about.
- Why physical therapists and chiropractors must be open to learning about new techniques to help their patients.

Took this snippet from a prior core360 belt post I did because I am starting to outline the 3 key levels of 360° breathing and core activation on .

Working on the quality of how you are breathing has so many benefits. In my practice there isn’t one patient who doesn’t get some level of focus on this training. Breathing has such a huge impact on how well we move, that it has to be a part of any successful rehab or wellness program.

This video shows you the basics. What it should look like as you inhale. Even small improvements can begin to change how you move and feel.

Re-posted • 🔘Basic breathing at the WAIST (primary level)🔘

Since we just discussed this key level, I grabbed a clip from a prior video that nicely shows the 360°expansion that occurs around the waist when we are breathing properly.

DNS Exercise 1 : 2022

Excited to announce 2 DNS courses coming up next year!
First one will be in LA area in March.

Class size will be limited in some way based on current COVID situation. This of course is meant to keep us all safe and healthy, but added bonus of each participant getting more one on one instruction and feedback time. Registration link? Hit sign up button above.

DNS Exercise I is a great course to up your movement game! Whether you are a PT, DC, trainer, yoga or Pilates practitioner, or coach, Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) can help you improve your client's outcomes. The course begins with the theory and basis behind the DNS approach, developmental kinesiology. Developmental kinesiology teaches us the process of a baby's development during the first year of life; from how they develop sagittal stabilization (core stabilization), to the inborn central nervous system movement patterns driving them to roll or crawl, to the integration of these stabilization and movement patterns required for them to become upright, walking beings. In DNS, we utilize the key developmental positions (think quadruped, “happy baby”, half kneel, oblique sit) that occur during the first year of life to both assess and improve/treat our clients stabilization and movement patterns. The amazing thing about DNS is that it is truly applicable to all levels of rehab, training, and performance.

These two things are so important. Specific focus and training them with quality should be included, to some degree, in every rehab and fitness program…..

Re-post• The word is out for sure! Breathing and core activation play a key role in our overall well-being and our ability to move well. Working in concert these two things greatly impact our ability to create functional stability, strength and power, while at the same time protecting our joints, tendons, muscles, discs and other tissues. This means more integrated and efficient movement with less chance of pain, strain or injury. But…..and there is a big but!

To have this effect on our movement system, aka, our body, it is the WAY we breathe and activate our core that matters.

Starting a practice where you focus on breathing and your core is a great start. But why not improve the likelihood of your efforts helping you improve and meet your goals by bringing your awareness to, and focusing on, the quality of how you are doing these things from the get-go?

Our training and performance tools have been designed by a physical therapist with the intention of helping you do just that so you can go further, faster, in your training..

Having the cueing and feedback from the core360 belt can definitely improve performance when cycling, but it is also a crucial part of any rehab program helping to translate what you learn in PT to “real life” situations. If you have low back, hip or knee pain and you have been working on improving the way you breathe and how you activate your core muscles by doing specific PT prescribed exercises, that new way of moving won’t automatically work when you return to your prior activities…you need to make sure you challenge and retrain that new coordination during more difficult movements as well to make sure you don’t return to your old patterns and re-stress your tissues and aggravate your symptoms. This is necessary in order to optimize your recovery.
Re-post • 🔘A little cueing from the core360 belt goes a long way to improve performance 🔘
If our core muscles are not working with good coordination, we have a difficult time stabilizing our low back and pelvis/hips (due to lack of good IAP or intra-abdominal pressure). On the bike, we need this good stabilization in order for our leg muscles to create power; however we see this lack of stability often with cyclists.
Not only will we lack power and efficiency if we cannot stabilize our spine, or core, but we also set ourselves up for injury or strain/pain.
Using the to help you feel how to create and maintain this good expanded core activity while on the bike is a great way to train this key function. As you build endurance, the cueing can help you maintain better core activity throughout your ride to take your performance further.
You can see with this cyclist, there is significant improvement of her stability, but she will need to continue to work with her core360 belt on and off the bike to improve her stabilization even more and her ability to maintain that good coordination for the duration of her ride. The majority of people will need to begin using the core360 belt off of the bike and build up to using it while riding….

Does adding resistance automatically make you use your diaphragm? For my repost of this video, I focused on how breathing influences your movement, so I wanted to take on a different perspective for this post.
Of course, the answer to the question is it depends, but I think it is important to view breathing just like any other movement pattern. If we have a poor movement pattern ingrained in our brain, adding weight or resistance to that pattern, in many cases, just reinforces that poor pattern. Why would this be different for breathing? If you are a chest breather and tend to use your chest and neck muscles to inhale, adding resistance to that inhalation can just make you use those chest and neck muscles even more. The resistance doesn’t automatically make you find the right muscle coordination.
Breathing trainers that are placed in the mouth can be great tools, just don’t forget to look at the quality of that breath before and while the resistance is being applied. Sometimes it is a matter of finding the right level of resistance and sometime it is just necessary to work on the quality of how you are breathing first, then add some resistance to it.
I am biased of course (since I created it), but combining the core360 belt with a breathing trainer placed in the mouth can be a powerful combination.
Re-posted • 🔘Does breathing influence our movement? You bet! 🔘
Great demonstration of how our breathing pattern influences our ability to create intra-abdominal pressure (or IAP) and why 360° breathing is one of two key basic functions everyone should be working on in order to improve how well we move..........Please go to for full post.
