I wrote Birthday Candles with Ken Presse and Maïa Davies. It was my first writing session EVER with another female. At the time, I was always hyper aware of how much space I took up in a room, constantly overthinking my ideas and feelings, fearing that they would cross a line…but working with Maïa opened up a whole new world of “owning one’s self” to me. I saw her own her s**t and it inspired me to do the same. I didn’t hold back on the story I wanted to paint and I just let it all pour out. I even feared including the song on the album cause I thought maybe it was too feminine, too random, too pop…. Basically any excuse to allow my cycle of self-doubt to continue. I am so FU***NG happy and grateful today that I had Maïa and Ken in my corner, believing in the song and pushing me to believe in it too. Birthday Candles comes out Friday August 26th. Don’t forget to pre-save! 💖
