The “good” ole days … !?!

The Launch Control Center at Oscar-Zero located 5 stories below ground was protected by a blast door only operable from the inside. A manually-powered hydraulic system moved massive pins in or out of the holes seen along the door frame. Once locked, it was thought the blast door could withstand up to 1,000 pounds per square inch overpressure - meaning Minuteman Launch Control Centers were some of the toughest nuclear bunkers ever built by the United States.

The door weighs approximately 8 tons and was open and shut by muscle power alone. In comparison, the door weighs approximately the same as an African elephant or nearly as much as a Tyrannosaurus Rex (also, 1,000 bowling balls or 40,000 Hamsters).

FYI

Today is Gold Star Spouse Day.

"During World War I, Americans hung blue stars in their windows for every family member serving in the military. If a loved one died in service, a gold star replaced the blue one. Since then, the Gold Star has symbolized the spouses and family members of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Every year on April 5, America salutes these spouses on Gold Star Spouses Day."

At KDVA, our benefits representatives are here to help our veterans' surviving spouses with finding out what benefits they are eligible for.

Visit our website at veterans.ky.gov under our Veterans Programs to find out more.

Stay warm

Due to the anticipated cold weather, Kenton County has established a list of warming centers.

A warming center is a short-term location that operates when temperatures or a combination of precipitation, wind chill, wind and temperature become dangerously inclement. Their paramount purpose is the prevention of death and injury from exposure to the elements. This may include acute injury to extremities due to frostbite. A more prevalent emergency which warming centers seek to prevent is hypothermia.

Lawmakers want to replace 'thank you for your service' with something even more meaningless 05/10/2022

"Nevertheless, the U.S. military faces a litany of problems that are not getting any better, and just as changing the name of french fries to “Freedom Fries” in congressional cafeterias did not help troops in Iraq, another symbolic measure of gratitude for troops and veterans will simply ring hollow."

The article - I know from "Task & Purpose" does bring up some great points ... we can do better America! Yes, Thank You's are useless, but appreciated - and personally, I like the idea of little kids understanding the thought behind "Thank you for our Freedoms!" - It could even drive conversations that are meaningful - now, and in the future of our youth.

Lawmakers want to replace 'thank you for your service' with something even more meaningless Because freedom costs a buck-o-five

CBoC - good!

LeAnn Gindele, Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center’s (VAMC) Nurse Manager for the Bellevue and Hamilton CBOCs, joined us for an in-depth conversation about both clinics and how they serve Veterans in their communities.

What is the primary purpose of the CBOCs?

Gindele: The primary purpose of the CBOCs is to provide care for Veterans near their homes—in their communities.

How do the Bellevue and Hamilton CBOCs differ from the main campus?

Gindele: The CBOCs have a very relaxed atmosphere and community feel. They’re busy, but not packed with people and Veterans won’t have to go to multiple places to receive different services.

This article is part of a series about the Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center Community-Based Outpatient Clinics. To read the full conversation click here, https://bit.ly/3y95Zuf
