Centric MusicFest

Centric MusicFest

Centric MusicFest is a classical and art music summer festival based in Lethbridge, Alberta.

The Centric Festival was founded in 2013 and had its inaugural edition in June 2014 in Lethbridge, Alberta. It featured a roster of local and international artists playing to packed houses over the course of one weekend. In 2020, Primo Music Association was formed as the producing non-profit society of Centric MusicFest and continues showcasing local and international world-class musicians in intimate venues.

🎢 Q+A with Sarah Hagen, piano 🎢

Q: What inspires you as an artist and musician?

Everything inspires me! My astounding colleagues, strange dreams after a midnight feast with friends, three words strung together in a novel, a ridiculous joke, baskets of poignant memories.

Q: What do you enjoy most about performing the Goldberg Variations?

I love the feeling of being in this rich, intense music with a crowd of people, all of us a part of the process, often even breathing together. I love the moments in between the notes. I love how each new piano asks for something else of the music and subsequently reveals something new to me. Was this music written hundreds of years ago? Or was it written just a moment ago to be performed on Saturday night in Lethbridge?

Q: Which is your "go to" piece of music to listen to?

My favourite piece to get me inspired to work in the morning is β€œI want to be Happy” sung by June Christy. It’s the first tune I listen to most days.

I’m obsessed with Steve Martin’s album The Crow. I also love the Norwegian band β€œKings of Convenience.”

Q: Is there any music by composers that you have not had the chance to study that you would be interested in performing?

Philip Glass. I think it would be meditative to work on and perform his works, in the same way Goldberg is meditative and transformative.

Q: What do you love about Lethbridge?

I have very special friends here, friends I made when I studied at U of L many years ago. I have friends from other places who have now moved here, and that makes it feel even more cosy. I have funny memories of my time here years ago… like cycling to practice at the university at 10:30 or 11 pm in -40 degree WINDY (of course!) weather. And of course I love being in the coulees!

Thanks for the chat, Sarah! 🎢 Don't miss Sarah performing on Goldberg Variations by Candlelight

🎢 Q+A with Jeran Lynnes, Primo Music Assoc. Scholarship Winner 🎢

Q: How does it feel to be selected as Primo Music Association's scholarship winner this year?

Extremely grateful, It feels very rewarding to have the effort I've put into these performances recognized, and I'm thankful for the opportunity to continue to play. On a more specific note this scholarship will help me to get new equipment and mallets for my continued schooling in the fall.

Q: What inspires you as an artist and musician?

I find that one of the biggest things I'm inspired by is when all the notes stop just sounding like notes on a page, and become music. At that point you can get swept fully into the music and get to convey emotions to share that experience more completely.

Q: Do you have any advice you can give to other young musicians who wish to develop a career in music?

The biggest piece of advice that I can give to younger musicians is to find something that really interests you. It may not be the most popular instrument, or the most well-known music. But if it interests you then it will help to fuel your passion and boost your creativity, overall improving your musicality. Another thing I can say is to play genres outside of your comfort zone. Doing that often opens the doors for new ideas and skills when playing within your own main genre.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Lethbridge?

One of the things I like most about Lethbridge is the music scene we have here. You can find tons of opportunities to play and show the city your musical talents. Another thing I like is how easy it is to get to know other musicians, that way you create a group of friends that all share similar passions.

Thanks for the chat, Jeran! 🎢 Don't miss Jeran on marimba for our closing concert of the festival,

🎢 Q+A with Alina Khvatova, first violin with CMF String Quartet 🎢

Q: What inspires you as an artist and musician?

My biggest inspiration comes from observing outstanding performances. It can be any genre, any instrument. Once I watch an artist pour their soul out on their instrument I get all fired up and ready to go practice for an hour or three!

Q: What do you enjoy most about performing in a Quartet?

My favourite thing about playing in any group, not just a Quartet is how the music gets woven together from the separate parts. Each performer is directing their essence towards a single whole. Sometimes you don't even need to count your rests: you can sense the music and the gestures of other musicians, and the music flows as if of its own accord.

Q: Which is your favorite piece of music to play?

That's a hard question! It can change depending on my mood, but I always come back to Bach's G minor Adagio from his first Sonata.

Q: And to listen to?

Shostakovich is my favourite composer, but I also love soundtracks from video games like the Witcher and Assassin's creed!

Q: What is your favorite thing about living in Southern Alberta?

It would have to be the people - the music community. How everyone is interconnected - everyone knows each other and lends support whenever needed. Not just the classical community - I have met lots of folk musicians playing with a couple of bands as well and they are no less awesome!

Thanks for the chat, Alina! 🎢 You can catch Alina performing as part of our Centric MusicFest String Quartet at three concerts!

🎢 Q+A with Fabiola Amorim, viola with CMF String Quartet 🎢

Q: What inspires you as an artist and musician?

Quite often, I hear from non-musicians the words, β€œWhat you do for a living is so
beautiful." I am certainly very touched by these types of compliments, and one can
certainly find beauty in what we do as artists, but for me, it goes beyond that. The
emotional aspect is only one facet of being a musician. But there are many other aspects that I consider relevant, such as the technical, the physical, the mental, the historical, and, of course, the emotional. So, my inspiration comes from exploring all of these different areas and bringing them together to present myself as a better musician in every performance.

Q: What do you enjoy most about performing in a Quartet?

The affinity of the four instruments on a string quartet is so specially. Each voice is so
relevant for the creation of the music, and I particularly love how the different tones from every instrument, brought together, can create such a compelling, and yet ravishing sounds.

Q: Which is your favorite piece of music to play?

There is so much great music written from different periods and in particular genres. I try to explore and work on a variety of repertoire, but if I have to pick one, I would say Rebecca Clarke, who was a violist and composer.

Q: And to listen to?

I listen to so much different music. From early music to contemporary. But I also like the popular genres, such as Bossa Nova. And lately, I have been into Fado, a Portuguese music genre traced back to the 1820s.

Q: What is your favorite thing about living in Southern Alberta?

From the cold winters to the beautiful landscapes of the mountains and the prairies, the natural scenarios are definitely one of my favourite things about Alberta.

🎢 Q+A with Vladmir Rufino, second violin with CMF String Quartet 🎢

Q: What inspires you as an artist and musician?

Since an early age I learned how unique is to be able to express my thoughts and emotions through my art. However, my inspiration comes not only through thoughts of my own, but collaboration with other artists, which I find fundamental to the performance of a piece. I am always fascinated on how the same piece can have so many different interpretations while playing with different groups of people. The human interactions and the environment surrounding a performance are an excellent source of inspiration to me.

Q: What do you enjoy most about performing in a Quartet?

For me, the intimacy of chamber music is best described in a string quartet. Four unique voices, blending into a sound that sometimes can be described as a pipe organ or even a symphony.

Q: Which is your favorite piece of music to play?

It is a very hard task to elect one single piece, as I enjoy performing pieces from Baroque to New Music. However, I have a special place in my heart for Romantic string quartets (i.e.: Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, and Brahms)

Q: And to listen to?

Besides listening to Classical music - from solo works to symphonies - I enjoy listening to MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira).

Q: What is your favorite thing about living in Southern Alberta?

Since moving to Alberta in 2012 I fell in love with nature; the prairies, the endless skies, and the mountains! When not in a rehearsal room or in my studio teaching, to be able to go outside and contemplate nature gives me a strong sense of peace, which gives me more energy and inspiration to perform.

🎢 Q+A with Jesse Plessis 🎢

Q: How does it feel to be back performing at Centric MusicFest?

It's absolutely wonderful. I can't believe I haven't played in Lethbridge in just about six years, and I'll be so happy to have a chance to reconnect with all my friends and loved ones in the city.

Q: What is the biggest change you've noticed over the last 10 years?

One thing that's really cool is how high Ryan aimed when he took over the direction of the festival. He has brought in artists who otherwise may not have performed in Lethbridge like Krzysztof JabΕ‚oΕ„ski, Andrew Wan, Philippe Sly, Michael McMahon, and this year will have Sarah Hagen. He worked really hard to do it, and I give him mad respect for that.

Q: What inspires you as an artist and musician?

That depends on the day as well as the particular passage of life I am going through. Often it's people - all my friends, family, colleagues, and teachers that are doing extraordinary things inspire me to push harder, go further, and try to be a better person and musician. Another constant source of wonderment and energy is that anything exists at all: how wild and precious it is to be endowed with the gift of awareness of anything at all.

Q: What do you enjoy most about performing Schubert & the Fleet Foxes?

All these works take their inspiration from what I guess we might call traditional music - Hungarian melodies in Schubert, and American folk song in the Fleet Foxes - and due to the strophic nature of folk songs these pieces contain a lot more repetition than you might otherwise find in classical piano pieces, and a type of repetition that works quite differently from the sort of that you would find in so-called minimalist music. So these pieces have the longer arc-form of classical music, but contained within that is a repetitive element that comes from more traditional or popular music, and for me that musical alloy is extremely beautiful.

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your process with transcriptions?

I have been wanting to make some piano versions of Fleet Foxes songs for a few years, since about 2016, but it was a project that ended up taking a back seat to other projects for a long time. Last autumn I caught Covid and I ended up unexpectedly having a week to myself, so I decided to make good use of it and I made the first draft of these transcriptions. I have made piano versions of a lot of different music as I have always enjoyed the problem-solving element of transposing music from one medium to another. When I do so, usually there is a fair bit of my own style in the mix and I enjoy discovering respectfully surprising twists that the music can take, so those pieces I usually call arrangements because they can end up being quite different from the original. When I was working on the Fleet Foxes songs, I kept finding that any attempt to restylize, reharmonize, or otherwise recast the music denatured the vibe of the song completely (which is likely a testament to the quality of Robin Pecknold's songwriting), so I went with that particular flow and kept these piano versions really quite faithful to the original recordings, and that is why I call them transcriptions rather than arrangements.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Lethbridge?

It's the people by far! It's going on 9 years since I lived there and I'm still in touch regularly with so many of my friends from there - the city and it's people will be in my heart until I don't have a heart anymore.

Thanks for chatting with us, Jesse! Don't forget to grab your tickets and join us for:

Our Story

Centric MusicFest is a summer classical music festival that has become a staple of the Lethbridge arts scene since its inaugural year in 2014. It is our mission to present talented professional and up-and-coming artists from Alberta and beyond to Lethbridge audiences every summer, and to encourage artistic collaboration between local and visiting festival participants to foster relationships with other arts communities across Canada.
