Father of the Gabbeh
Gabbeh (Persian: گبه) carpets are a traditional variety of Persian carpet. Gabbeh is known as Gava in Kurdish and Luri and is also called Khersak (خرسک) in Bakhtiari. A Gabbeh a hand-woven pile rug of coarse quality and medium size (90 x 150 cm or larger) characterized by an abstract design that relies upon open fields of color and a playfulness with geometry. This type of ru
g is popular among the populations of the Zagros Mountains of Iran, including Kurdish, Luri and Qashqai people. The Gabbeh is usually crafted by women.
'Gabbeh' carpet is much thicker and coarser than other Persian carpets; sometimes it is as much as one inch in depth. The word 'Gabbeh' comes from the Persian meaning raw, natural, uncut. This is a rough and primitive carpet. Gabbeh patterns are of a very basic kind with only a limited number of decorative, mostly rectangular objects resembling mainly animals. In Gabbeh usually bright colors, such as yellow and red, are used. Although large fields of solid color are used in Gabbeh designs, the color is variegated (the color varies throughout the rug). Gabbehs are made of natural, handspun wool yarn and all the colors are created with natural plant dye. Due to its relative ease of production (less precise pattern, small number of knots per square centimeter, etc.) The attraction of Gabbeh carpet
It is something impossible to comprehend only with the intellect. The dye derives from natural sources, and the yarn is handspun virgin wool. But beyond such elements, Gabbeh has something that vibrates within our hearts. The Qashqai women innocently weave their wishes for the happiness of their families and the inspiration from abundant nature into each carpet. We reckon that this expressive power and originality flowing freely from their imagination are vital to the attractiveness of Gabbeh. The Zollanvari family has a long tradition in the oriental carpet trade. In 1947 Gholamreza Zollanvari, the current proprietor, joined his father's carpet business. Over time, the family has cultivated strong links with the nomadic communities, and enjoys a trusting relationship. The weavers consequently produce unique carpets with abstract designs that accentuate their bold colours. In order to ensure the exclusive quality and maintenance the original handicraft is the center of attention: the weaving of wool by hand, the colouring with ecru as well as special care in cleaning. The new highest quality Gabbehs that can be obtained today are those produced by Zollanvari. Due to the long term and close cooperation with various nomadic tribes Zollanvari has an extensive network of excellent weavers. This allows a versatile and ever-developing production of new , contemprary rugs. They manage a population of about 30,000 Qashqai people and suggesting broad themes for the carpets, place orders with the women. After collecting 100,000 sqm carpets per year through local representatives from different regions of Fars province, they dispatch them to the main warehouse in Tehran. After thorough washing and careful finishing extensive quality control will be applied to inch by inch of the carpet and be ready for the market, at this stage we call the carpets the ‘’ ZOLLANVARI-PRODUCED GABBEH’’
Sustainability of Zollanvari lead them to have 5 active branches and many direct agents all over the world to maintain the needs of the market, to feed new hunger of designers and to show the customers a real practical customer oriented company. Address :
