Having loads of money doesn't make you a better person. Spending it smart does. - Ziad K. Abdelnour
HOW TO BE FINANCIALLY SUCCESSFUL
by Dee Tercias
In a world where money is a way to keep score, you may be wondering how can you also be one of the successful ones. Indeed, there are some who were born rich (lucky them) but there is also a good number of successful people who worked hard to reach the level they are in.
You don't have to be a criminal or be a ruthless glutton taking advantage of the poor to be financially wealthy. Believe it or not, we are all given a chance to have a comfortable life. Financial success may mean differently depending who you are talking to. One thing will prove true in all instances though-- Success is just the tip of the iceberg. Financially Successful people do things average people miss out on.
Here are 5 amazingly basic things the financially successful do that average people don't:
1. Their big WHY is clear to them and they have it close to their heart.
You may have attended a team-building session, one time or another and they asked you to dig deep and find out why you do what you do. Possible reasons may include: it may be because you're a single parent working hard for your child, or you're a loving son who wants his parents live a comfortable life, or you've lived a poor life all your life that you want to live a life only rock stars can experience. Others may have taken a step forward and would like to help people who are in need.
If you haven't uncovered your big why, take some time off to meditate and uncover your purpose.
So what's the difference of the financially successful to the average when they both know their purpose?
The successful keep doing what they do and keep striving to be better each and every day even if it is painful, even if it is uncomfortable, even if others think it's time to give up.
2. They SAVE before they spend
There are different spending habits. Some spend even before they earn. Some spend first and save what is left. (That is if there's anything left) Some save first before they even spend.
Putting aside a percentage of your income (ideally at least 20%) and saving it will help you to build an emergency fund and eventually a fund to grow to earn passive income. If it is painful to save 20%, start with 5 or 10% until you make saving second nature to you.
3. They keep themselves HUMBLE
Things can't always go your way. When bad things happen, successful people don't waste time complaining, they treat unfortunate events as lessons and they find ways to make roadblocks into opportunities.
They don't think they already know everything there is to learn. Successful and wealthy people don't stop learning-- they at least read a book every day. They enroll themselves to seminars and trainings. When they meet people to network, it is either for connections to earn or to learn.
4. They MANAGE their debt smartly
There are valid instances to get a loan. Credit cards aren't necessarily bad. But if you are using credit cards as free-money, you are definitely doing it wrong -- as the name implied, a credit card gives you credit, so you must pay it back.
Simply put, living within your means is all about spending money you've already earned. Actually, to qualify that, it is spending within a budget based on what is left of your income after putting aside money for your savings. This doesn't mean you can't get a new iPhone, it simply means to plan your spending and save up for those big ticket expenditure.
Financially successful people know that when they borrow money, whatever they plan to buy with the borrowed money should earn more than the money they borrowed plus the interest rate charged to it. If you're swiping your credit card to live an instagram-worthy life better think twice or thrice unless your selfies showing that you're living a lavish life earns you good money to pay your card.
5. They have SAFETY NETS
Before they jump off a tall building, they know something is there to catch them.
And NO, I didn't mean that literally.
People seem to have lost faith in the corporate world that they dream to have a business in their hope to live a comfortable life. Have you noticed a lot of new grads choose to start a business rather than get a job? Although it is true that having your own business can get you farther, it is not wise to just take risks without safety nets. It is not advisable to just take a loan and risk everything in a business only for you to see it crumble. It is easier to take risks when you know you've got yourself covered. Relating it to startups, you first have to build a fund to hold you up while waiting for the cash to flow in. As Aimee Groth of Quartz put it, 'When basic needs are met, it's easier to be creative; when you know you have a safety net, you are more willing to take risks".
You gotta have a Safety Net-- these come in different forms, a good fund that grows passively in case your big break hasn't come in yet, a life coverage in case you run out of time, a health insurance to cover what HMOs can't, a retirement fund in case old age catches up before you reached your goal.
Everyone is given opportunity to be successful. The question is, are you willing to do what it takes to be one? If after reading this you feel it is the time to take a step forward to reach that destination, I wish you enjoy the journey.
Oh, one more thing, they say if you want to run fast, run alone. But if you want to run far, run with a companion.
Six things to consider before investing A lot of people have asked me about investing—where to put their money, how much to invest, do they buy stocks, mutual funds, condominiums, etc.
