''But I have to enjoy life'' 20/01/2016

A small mindset shift can lead to a big difference.

''But I have to enjoy life'' When discussing nutrition I have heard this phrase being uttered over and over again. There’s so much nutritional information out there in the big wide web that nowadays people have a pretty good idea of the basics. Keeping processed food to a minimum, eating an array of fresh fruit and veg, consumi…

New Year - New You? 05/01/2016

New Years resolutions, where do they really get us? A post about how to make sustainable changes past the January period.

New Year - New You? With Christmas well and truly tucked back in it’s box and shoved back in the attic, the New Year has begun. But what does this New Year hold for you, and how is it starting? I think we can all resonate with the thought that we are now dealing with the ‘fallout’ from Christmas, too much

Food shaming and nutritional elitism are becoming more common in the world of nutrition, we are forgetting it is a privilege to eat well, a privilege not everyone has.

Nutritional Elitism - It’s just not Cricket When working with clients I am fully aware that everyone has a different scope or reach with their nutrition. It is important to meet that individual where they are, and make small changes which may benefit their health without them feeling pressure to obtain a nutritional status beyond their means.…

Are you a Sugar Burner or Fat Burner? 04/12/2015

Are you a sugar burner or fat burner? Find out more.............

Are you a Sugar Burner or Fat Burner? Often one of the most common complaints I hear is that people don’t have enough energy. Not having enough energy can lead to certain dietary ‘fixes’ for stimulation such as energy drinks, bars, supplements and of course coffee. All of these are generally short-lived stimulation, but they can become…

Is Sugar really the Devil? 06/11/2015

Following on from Halloween and with Christmas just round the corner, here's what I have to say regarding the intake of Sugar.

Is Sugar really the Devil? With Halloween just a week ago, I’ve seen a number of articles popping up regarding the dangers of sugar. The general consensus is that sugar is bad for us, it’s an 'addictive substance’ which is ‘as bad as cocaine’, it’s responsible for heart disease, diabetes, obesity, behaviour problems etc etc b…

Does Bacon really cause cancer? 30/10/2015

Here is my take on the latest media frenzy regarding Bacon supposedly being as bad as smoking.

Does Bacon really cause cancer? Most of you have probably seen the headlines over the last few days regarding the link between the consumption of red meat and development of cancer. The main tag line the media is jumping on is that Bacon has been revealed to be as bad as smoking, but is it? I can’t help one of my first

Processed meat and cancer – what you need to know 29/10/2015

This article on Cancer Research is a really great and sensible read regarding the latest health scare headlines about red meat. As always, the poison is in the dose....... "Processed meat has been classified as a ‘definite’ cause of cancer (or Group 1 carcinogen) – the same group that includes smoking and alcohol. And red meat is a ‘probable’ cause of cancer (or a Group 2a carcinogen) – the same group as shift work. While this may sound alarming, it’s important to remember that these groups show how confident IARC is that red and processed meat cause cancer, not how much cancer they cause." Serafin Health will be coming out shortly with it's own take on the latest sensationalist headlines and what it might mean for your nutritional choices going forward.

A must read for anyone interested in healthy fat loss or for any of you athletes out there wanting to tweak things a little.

Body Recomposition for Healthy Fat Loss So what is body recomposition you ask? In very basic terms it’s shifting the composition of your body for more favourable results both visually and physically. It's not all about Nutrition, habits and a balanced approach to health goes a long way.

A life in Balance. The subject I want to write about today is moderation, balance and habits, all important factors in achieving good nutrition. When people talk about moderation in terms of nutrition, they often use it as a word to describe indulging in what they would consider to be less than healthful choices. Peop…

10 Things You Shouldn’t Do If You’re Trying to Build Muscle 24/09/2015

This will be of interest for anyone trying to gain strength or build muscle. Some great points on what not to do.

10 Things You Shouldn’t Do If You’re Trying to Build Muscle While it’s important to think positive and focus on all the things you should be doing to achieve your goals, it’s equally important that we focus on those things that interfere with our goals and remind ourselves to avoid doing them. Some call it the “not to do list,” which I like. Many of the beha…

A nutrient combination designed to enhance synapse formation and function improves outcome in... 23/09/2015

People that may suffer from memory loss, cloudy thinking, inability to concentrate, suffered brain trauma or are pre-disposed to genetic conditions of the brain, such as alchemiers, this may be interesting. Below a summary from the Mindset Performance Institute: Are their truly nutrients that can help your brain health? If so, which ones? Looking at a recent study for neuro regeneration, in this case following spinal cord injury, it is true the nerves do regenerate, but it is very very slow. And the odds of them "lining up with each other" if they do get that far is very small too. A brand new study on Sept 17, 2015, gives us some clues. In this rat model, they examined the effect of Fortasyn® Connect in a compression model of spinal cord injury for up to 9 weeks. "...The Fortasyn® Connect-enriched diet showed significant efficacy in locomotor recovery after 9weeks of supplementation, along with protection of spinal cord tissue (increased neuronal and oligodendrocyte survival, decreased microglial activation, and preserved axonal integrity)." In English --it helped! Fortasyn® Connect is a specific multi-nutrient combination containing DHA, EPA, choline, uridine monophosphate, phospholipids, and various vitamins (rumored to be selenium, folic acid, vitamins B6, B12, C and E). EPA and DHA are commonly known as fish oils. Summary While this is a limited study within rats, it does provide some clues that the right blend of nutrients may enhance the ability to change our brains faster! Reference http://ift.tt/1JoUFVL

Paleofication: Just Because The Label Says Paleo Doesn’t Mean It’s Healthy… 11/03/2015

Great blog post by Robb Wolf. Unfortunately although the principles of Paleo are sound, it is being turned into another fad by people trying to cash in and 'paleofying' everything and anything. If you look up the Paleo diet online you will more than likely be directed to many sites offering Paleo baked goods of mouth watering proportions. But lets face it guys, Paleo baking is a little bit like having s*x with your pants on, sooner or later your going to want the real thing, and to be honest you'd just be better off having that in the first place, in moderation and IF it is conducive to your goals. Just because it says Paleo before it, it doesn't mean it is a healthy, weightloss food, and eating regular Paleo baked goods isn't going to cut it if you've turned to this way of eating for weightloss or to heal a health condition. Paleo has a sound principle in that it helps people get back to eating fresh, unprocessed foods, but to me it is a starting point to build on, and individual differences, needs and wants will dictate where you go from there. So beware of being duped into thinking you are eating 'clean' just because it has Paleo before it, it may be less processed, but its still not a one ingredient food and too much of anything is not always a good thing.
