[Some Consideration Factors Selecting Higher Chinese or Normal Chinese]

Recently I saw on social media a celebrity mom posted a picture of Higher Chinese (HCL) textbook. She mentioned that her son was thrilled to take HCL in secondary school because one only needs 4 years of study as compared to taking Normal Chinese which needs 5 years.

I have to agree that the 4 short years stint is a big lure. As a parent, should you encourage your child to embark on this?

To put everything in perspective, secondary school students are offered HCL if the respective schools have this in their course curriculum. And schools will encourage students to take up, citing a shorter
study period (4 years vs 5 years for Normal Chinese), and the possibility of dropping it, reverting to Normal Chinese should one decide later.

Before a parent be enticed to take this route, consider these:

1) Were your child struggling with HCL in his primary school days?
2) Did you send him for tuition for this subject?
3) Has he been scoring below As in this subject (or merely a Pass in this subject in PSLE)?

If your answer has a majority of ‘Yes’, then the HCL might not be suitable for him. Let’s not deny the fact that we live in an environment that does not quite support Mandarin-speaking, in particular, our offspring. Unless you are a PRC or from Taiwan, our Chinese is generally
half-past-six. In this aspect, our children are already behind the starting line.

Who are the students who will definitely take HCL? They are usually the PRCs, who have a much stronger foundation in Chinese than our children. Singaporean parents with children taking HCL ended up sending their children to tuition, just to
ensure they can get a Pass or Distinction in PSLE.

When our children go into secondary school, they will be doing 8 subjects, double the number of subjects in primary school. Do we want our children to spend the bulk of their free time brushing up
on HCL, or would you prefer them to spend a good number of hours on subjects that matter more?

Ironically, the standard between Normal Chinese and Higher Chinese is vast. Higher Chinese is really not easy. On top of that, the proficiency level of the students taking Higher Chinese and Normal Chinese is of a wide spectrum.

So think very carefully when you help your child in subject selection. Do not just be lured into the shorter stint. I would rather have my child cruise with Normal Chinese over 5 years than struggle with Higher
Chinese over 4 years.

Having said that, if your child is already very proficient in HCL, please go ahead with HCL. China is the world second largest economy, whenever possible, we should do our best to prepare our children to integrate into this economic powerhouse. Above all, know your child’s ability is the most important consideration.

Understanding deposit insurance 12/03/2023

The fall of Silvergate & SVB have caused some people to fear that there will be a collapse in the US banking system. Some even think interest rates will be revised downward.

I doubt.

SVB is not a consumer bank, its majority clients are VCs & start-ups. The equity market might be jittery for a while, Fed might pause rate hike to contain the fear, only to raise the interest rate when market sentiment is more stable.

Just for info, our Singdollar deposit is safe up to S$75k per bank in SG. If you have idle cash, spread it across to other banks lah.

Understanding deposit insurance Deposit insurance guarantees the money in your bank up to $75,000 per bank per person. Find out more about Deposit Insurance Scheme and how your money is protected.

No doubt, it is hard yet necessary.
As the boy stays on board school hostel for the whole of 2023, the feeling of empty nest creeps in.

It is a new phase of life for him, and a learning phase for both of us.

"According to Psychologists, there are four types of Intelligence:

1) Intelligence Quotient (IQ)
2) Emotional Quotient (EQ)
3) Social Quotient (SQ)
4) Adversity Quotient (AQ)

1. Intelligence Quotient (IQ): this is the measure of your level of comprehension. You need IQ to solve maths, memorize things, and recall lessons.

2. Emotional Quotient (EQ): this is the measure of your ability to maintain peace with others, keep to time, be responsible, be honest, respect boundaries, be humble, genuine and considerate.

3. Social Quotient (SQ): this is the measure of your ability to build a network of friends and maintain it over a long period of time.

People that have higher EQ and SQ tend to go further in life than those with a high IQ but low EQ and SQ. Most schools capitalize on improving IQ levels while EQ and SQ are played down.

A man of high IQ can end up being employed by a man of high EQ and SQ even though he has an average IQ.

Your EQ represents your Character, while your SQ represents your Charisma. Give in to habits that will improve these three Qs, especially your EQ and SQ.

Now there is a 4th one, a new paradigm:

4. The Adversity Quotient (AQ): The measure of your ability to go through a rough patch in life, and come out of it without losing your mind.

When faced with troubles, AQ determines who will give up, who will abandon their family, and who will consider su***de.

Parents please expose your children to other areas of life than just Academics. They should adore manual labour (never use work as a form of punishment), Sports and Arts.

Develop their IQ, as well as their EQ, SQ and AQ. They should become multifaceted human beings able to do things independently of their parents.

Finally, do not prepare the road for your children. Prepare your children for the road."

[𝐃𝐢𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨]

ᴀ ᴘᴇʀꜱᴏɴ ᴏɴ ʜɪꜱ ᴅᴇᴀᴛʜʙᴇᴅ ᴄᴀɴ'ᴛ ᴅᴏ ᴍᴜᴄʜ ᴏꜰ ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ᴇxᴄᴇᴘᴛ ᴛʜɪɴᴋɪɴɢ ʙᴀᴄᴋ ᴛᴏ ᴡʜᴀᴛ ʜᴇ ʜᴀꜱ ᴀʟʀᴇᴀᴅʏ ᴅᴏɴᴇ ɪɴ ʜɪꜱ ʟɪꜰᴇ.

This is a brutal truth and a major takeaway after reading this book 𝐃𝐢𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨.

𝐃𝐢𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 doesn't mean die leaving behind nothing. Instead, the 𝐃𝐢𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 way makes sure that we deliver on our good intentions before we die, and leaving minimal material stuff when we are nearing death.

When it comes to our kids, 𝐃𝐢𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 teaches us to deliberately think about how much to give them and then doing so, before we die. For example, if our children could get the money when they are 30, they can buy a nice house and raise their children in the environment they want to raise them in, and not having to scramble the way others who don't have the aid did. 𝐃𝐢𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 states that there is absolutely no use to pass our children a lump sum of inheritance when they are at 50s, when they actually need that lump sum at their 30s. I can't help but to agree.

The author highlighted that the money we are leaving to our kids is NOT our money. It is their money. If we are really putting our kids first, as we claimed, don't wait until we are dead to show our generosity. Separate their money (which becomes untouchable by us) from our money to spend.

After setting aside all these untouchables, the author encourages us to use the money set aside for ourselves to buy experiences. Experiences yield dividends because we humans have memory. Experiences are investment in our future selves, paying dividends and helping us live richer lives. When we look back on our life, the richness of those experiences will determine our judgement of how full a life we have led.

In short, our real legacy isn't Money.
Money is just a mean to an end.
Money is just a way to buy meaningful experiences that make up our lives.

Your life is the sum of your life experiences.

How true as I reflect on this statement!

I came across this book - Die With Zero when I saw Spencer Li's review. I took interest in his sharing and decided to read it myself, and also listen to the audio book.

The book stresses that your life can be maximised through memorable experiences. And this brought to search my memory bank, remisincing my youthful days, one of which is this experience of Canyon Swing in New Zealand, one of my solo trips.

Canyon swing is similar to Bungee Jump, except, you sit on a chair and got thrown down and swing.

I remember the thoughts I had gone through the night before the activity vividly (advance booking for such activity was needed).

‘What if the rope snapped?’ 🤢
I immediately regretted signing up on that thought. 😣
Still, I went ahead since I had paid hundreds for it.

BUT, it was an Experience I never forget. When I got thrown down, I felt I left my heart up on the clift while my physical body was swinging like a pendulum, above the lake.

I totally resonate with what the author shared. Experiences yield memory dividends and these are what we want and to leave behind with our loved ones. How glad I am to be able to make a few mother-and-son exclusive trips to HK, Taiwan and China with AJ.

Now that we can't travel yet, we can still create memory dividends. I have just booked an iFly session for AJ and me. ✌️

[Conversation with AJ #4]

I signalled right to change lane that was designated for right turn. Once I was in that dedicated right turn lane, I turned off my signal (because the ticking sound wasn't pleasant to me, and I was already in the dedicated lane)

AJ: "Mommy, when I grow up (he is 15 this year), I will still have the turn signal on even on the dedicated lane."

I knew what he meant. He has been taught that signalling is one of the most important communication between cars (because drivers can't talk to each other).

He picked up manners I have while on the road like using hand gestures to express thanks to drivers giving way.

In other words, he will be a safer driver on the road next time.

Me: "But I think, when the time comes, you probably need not drive any more, because we will have autonomous cars."

We both laughed.

AJ: "Yah right! By then all the cars on the road will be able to communicate with each other."

[Conversation with AJ #3]

My ex-boss has just moved in to a 3,000sqft landed house and I visited him during CNY. The next day AJ asked me... ...

AJ: Mummy, why does uncle X need such a big space ('cos there are only 3 adults and 1 Golden Retriever living in there)?

Me: Why not? When you have the financial means, there is nothing wrong with living a more comfortable live.

AJ: Isn't this a waste of money?

Me: Let's not be judgemental here. When you can afford it, and you find that you need a bigger space to live more comfortably and thereby, making you a happier person, then why not?

Especially when we WFH so frequently these days, we need the privacy to work more efficiently.

Imagine you need a bigger space, you have the means to, but you force yourself to stay in a small confined place, would you be more stressed out, more grouchy and more tensed up? And you would probably get agitated so easily that any small issues that get into your way will snap you. You would end up being very impatient, becoming a very negative person.

AJ: OK.
When we get older, we should move to a smaller space, right?

Me: When we reach that age, we'll then see what we can afford. Some of your grand aunties and uncles have the means to live in bigger space, and they love it. They have gardens which they can plant veg and herbs, they can host overseas relatives and friends when visitations were allowed. They love this kind of lifestyle and enjoy being hospitable. They have the means to live a more comfortable life and be able to extend their love out to others. Overall, they are influencing people around them positively.

Most importantly, know what you need to be productive, efficient and within your means, give yourself a comfortable life so that you may eliminate negativity. In the process, you'll find yourself being a channel of blessings.
