The wise sayings of Shen Ken Shu: A Man, A Myth or A Mirage

☞︎ A Tiv Man walks into a Bar:

A Tiv man called Hashim, who just moved to Lagos from Benue, walks into a bar and orders four glasses of Whiskey.

He sits at his table, drinking a sip from each glass one after the other.

When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders four more.

The bartender approaches and tells Hashim:

"You know, a glass of whiskey is less chill and poignant after I pour it.

It would taste better if you bought one at a time."

Hashim replies:

"Well, you see, I have three brothers.

One is in Imo State, one is in Calabar and the other is in Kaduna.

When we all left our home in Benue, we promised that we will drink this way to remember the days when we drank together.

So I'm drinking one glass for each of my brothers and one for myself."

The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves the matter there.

Hashim becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way.

He orders four glasses and drinks by sipping them each in turn.

One day, he comes in and only orders three glasses.

All the regulars in the bar take notice of this and the entire bar falls silent.

When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says:

"I don't want to intrude on your grief, but we all wanted to offer our condolences on your loss."

Hashim looked very surprised for a moment, then realizes what the bartender meant and he laughs and says:

"Oh, no, everybody is doing fine," and he explains:

"It's just that my wife and I joined the Baptist Church and I had to quit drinking."

β€œIt hasn't affected my three brothers though"

Dan Maraya Jos vs. Saadou Bori

__________________________

Saadou Bori:

Saadou Abdullahi, born in 1966 in Niger Republic was best known as Saadou Bori, after his best selling solo album, Bori, released on tape in Nigeria in 1990.

After the death of Bala Miller in February 2003, Saadou indeed represented the last breed of truly innovative Hausa musicians and composers with a focus on using real instruments to present their craft.

His Bori Album turned out to be the biggest selling tape-album of 1990 in Kano and other parts of Hausa northern Nigeria.

It came at a time when there was simply no Hausa modern music. And the traditional music was relegated to the background of Palaces.

The Bori Album redefined Hausa dance music and provided a shift in the evolution of modern Hausa music. Not only did it provide a dance floor series, it also neatly mixed the modern with traditional in its lyrical forms.

The Bori Album had eight tracks, and of these eight tracks, two became Saadou Bori’s defining masterpiece and ultimately signature tune.

These were Yelleru, and Hadiza.

Yelleru offered a new perspective to Hausa fusion music because it contained lyrics in pulaa (Fulfulde language). Simple and catchy, it tells the story of a how the economic hardships befell the Fulbe who may have to give up their cattle and nomadic lifestyles for a settled farm life.

Hadiza hit the spot more directly with Hausa women. It tells the story of a new bride (amarya) in a two-wife household. The song extols the virtues of the amarya.

In 1994 Saadou teamed up with Moussa Poussy and released an extended version of Bori as Niamey Twice.

Niamey Twice became an international sensation. the two popular musicians with no domestic music industry to turn to, joined forces and travelled to Abidjan to record Niger Republic's first international album.

Saadou was an innovative songwriter, arranger and vocalist. He remained the last of the great composers of Hausa modern music on a World Music level.

Towards the end, Saadou Bori had made Nigeria virtually his second home, performing at weddings and other engagements.

He died in a car accident on the road to Maiduguri, on Thursday 26th June 2008 and was buried the next day at his home town of Maradi in Niger Republic.

_______________________

Ɗan Maraya Jos:

Born Adamu Wayya in 1946 at Bukuru in Plateau State was a Nigerian Hausa griot, poet, philosopher, philanthropist and recording artist known for playing the kontigi.

Popularly known as Ɗan Maraya Jos, meaning "The Orphan of Jos", because his father died shortly after his birth and his mother died while he was still an infant.

Dan Maraya's father had been a court musician for the Sarkin Hausawa of Bukuru. After his parent's death, the Emir (or Sarkin Hausawa) took Dan Maraya under his care.

Dan Maraya chose the griot profession when he was seven-years old, having been told that his decreased father was a royal drummer.
During a trip to Maiduguri while he was still a pre-teen, he was impressed by musicians some playing with the Kuntigi instrument, upon his return to Jos, he made a kuntigi, with which he would accompany himself till death.

Dan Maraya was a phenomenal vocalist, who became a master of 'goge' the Nigerian violin, having learned in training for his profession as a griot.

Like most griot professional musicians, the mainstay of Dan Maraya's repertoire was praise singing, but Dan Maraya singled out his personal heroes rather than the rich and famous.

His repertoire also included "songs about natural phenomena such as death, luck, wealth etc" as well as socially critical songs about "anti-societal acts."

By the end of his life he had toured internationally, performing in the United States, the Netherlands, Germany, Cuba, Trinidad, Jamaica, Guyana, Venezuela, Brazil, and Ethiopia.

As recording artist he had recorded at least 150 LPs and singles and composed 500 songs since 1986.

Dan Maraya died 20 June 2015, at Bukuru his hometown after a protracted illness.

He was a Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), an Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and a recipient of the Nigerian Federal Republic Medal.

His most popular performances include: Auren Dole Gulma-Wuya Jawabin Aure Kidan Kashewa, Wakar Keren Mota and many more.

May their souls rest in peace.

This two African footballers chose their clubs over country ahead of this 2024 African nations cup.

It is sickening if you can remember the Brazilian call up for the previous world cup which was aired live, you could see Brazilian Super Stars jubilating with their families and some even crying when their name was called for them to serve their nation.

Or if you remember that at some point Lionel Messi was paying the salaries of the entire Argentinian FA and he was still never late for training and never missed a match, not even friendlies.

Imagine Ronaldo, Pele, Maradona, Zidane, Christiano etc and their attitude towards international football.

All great footballers are eager to serve their nations and try to do more for their country than for any where else, but this two monkeys clearly don't understand that.

Unemployment in Nigeria (Laugh a little 😁)

A Biology graduate from the University of Benin was having difficulty in finding a job. He saw an advert in one of the daily news papers for a job at a zoo.

In the interview, the manager told him that their gorilla, which had been their main tourists attraction died so they needed someone to wear a costume and play the role of a gorilla.
The graduate felt embarrassed, but since the salary was good, he accepted the job.

The first day, he put on the gorilla costume and entered the cage, he jumped up and down, beat his chest and roared like a gorilla and everyone cheered. The next day, he put on the gorilla costume again and started moving around the zoo but mistakenly entered another cage and found himself staring straight at a lion.

The lion roared and rushed towards him. The scared graduate quickly forgot that he was a gorilla and he started shouting like a human being: "Help me! Help me!"

The lion leaped onto him, knocked him to the ground and whispered in his ear:

"Kunle, it's me Lekan, your course mate from the University. Shut up or we'll both lose our jobs here today" 😁
