We had such a fun time Saturday afternoon in Downtown Providence with Glenn Turner PhotographerGlenn Turner Photographer at our WIFVNE Headshot Clinic. It was so nice to get a moment to chat with the WIFVNE Members & guests who came by!
Hands down, Glenn is an absolute dream to work with and has a very laid-back studio! PLUS? Taking a peek at all your new headshot choices? Y'all !
Thank you to all who attended our interactive discussion on the importance of inclusive casting & accurate representation of diverse groups within entertainment and commercial media. Co-hosted and Moderated by Kristie Raymond, HumanKind casting + talent, the discussion featured panelists (seated left to right): Steven Kaldeck, neurodivergent actor & editor; Erik Kondo, wheelchair user & disability advocate; Laura Marotta, Founder of Creative Hub & LGBTQA advocate; and Lรฉon Jerfita, Deaf performer. (Seated far left is ASL interpreter Jesserina Kolaco.)
Panelists shared personal experiences and anecdotes, as well as recommended actionable strategies to practice towards fostering new standards in entertainment, film, and commercial production.
Kondo shared illuminating examples of stock photography commonly used in advertising to depict wheelchair users. He pointed out that not only were the wheelchairs depicted inappropriate for actual daily use, but some of the images were of able-bodied models. All of this was incredibly revealing when displayed side-by-side with actual disabled individuals in their customized wheelchairs. These errors would be immediately apparent to any wheelchair user, solidly sending a message that the images were created without any conversation with the disabled community.
Women In Film & Video New England would like to especially thank Kristie Raymond and all the panelists gathered for their time, energy, openness, and invaluable insight into these issues, as well as Board member Alyson Muzila for coordinating the eventโand of course, all of our attendees!
