Good Jobs Somerville

Somerville is booming, yet far too many Somerville residents are being left behind. We are urging developers to use union labor & hire local residents.

Federal Realty Investment Trust (FRIT) the developer of Assembly Sq. is choosing a general contractor for a huge 448-unit apartment building on Parcel 6. Although FRIT has not yet selected a contractor, it had initiatlly planned to use a non-union firm. That would mean workers receiving sub-standard wages and few, if any benefits. A letter from "Good Jobs Somerville" signed by more than 75 residen

SJC approves ballot questions on gig driver employment status, union organizing - The Boston Globe 27/06/2024

Here comes trouble from Big Tech!
Great response by Chrissy Lynch Massachusetts Is Not For Sale and Massachusetts AFL-CIO State Fed!
“The SJC has upheld five separate schemes created by multinational Big Tech corporations to take away the basic rights that are guaranteed to all workers in Massachusetts through a number of misleading ballot questions,” Chrissy Lynch, Massachusetts Is Not For Sale chairwoman and Massachusetts AFL-CIO president, said in a statement. “These corporations have already spent millions of dollars in ads touting flexibility – a word that never appears in any of their five petitions. This isn’t about benefitting app-based workers – it’s about exploiting them to boost corporate profits.”

Dissecting the ‘toxic’ State House culture 29/05/2024

Travis Benson nails it! Deep, systemic problems with our state government.

Dissecting the ‘toxic’ State House culture The culture incentivizes a Stockholm syndrome-like relationship to power, where reps fall in line for crumbs from leadership, and advocates and organizations fall in line for access to the reps.

Ron Carey’s Lessons in Labor Movement Reform 02/04/2024

This article, co-authored with Steve Early, is based on an afterword we wrote for Ken Reiman's new book: "Ron Carey and the Teamsters." (Link to buy the book from MR Press is in the first comment below.)

Ron Carey’s Lessons in Labor Movement Reform The late and legendary Teamsters reform leader Ron Carey briefly succeeded in a monumental task: turning around a corrupt and conservative union. Today’s aspiring reformers looking to revitalize their own unions can learn from his career.

Working Class to Biden: Help! 13/03/2024

Excellent commentary as usual by Les Leopold.

Working Class to Biden: Help! Like it or not, it’s political Groundhog Day. The Biden/Trump looped tape is rolling, and the contest will again center on the Blue Wall states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Working-class voters will be key. In 2020, Biden squeaked through while receiving just 36.2 percent of the white...

A very nice endorsement from Mike Connolly
“If you live in Pat Jehlen's state senate district — the Second Middlesex — including all of Somerville and parts of Cambridge, Medford and Wi******er — I suggest you vote for Rand Wilson.
“Rand has been a tireless advocate for democratic principles and a visionary leader for organized labor and progressive causes. His impact has been felt in Somerville and across Massachusetts, and he’s one of the first people I looked up to when I got into the field of organizing and advocacy myself, some 14 years ago. I appreciate all that Rand has done to support fellow progressives and for his fearless willingness to take on the Democratic Party establishment.
“There's more about Rand's candidacy here in Cambridge Day.”

Wilson endorsement for Democratic committee comes from former member who wants change - Cambridge Day 27/02/2024

Things are heating up as we enter the home stretch to the March 5 primary election. Here's a letter to the editor by Harriotte Hurie Ranvig, a former disability "add-on" state committee member responding to the negative attacks that have distorted my proposals for a more democratic and accountable state party by Justin Klekota.

Op-ed: Elect Rand Wilson for Democratic State Committee - The Tufts Daily I'm sure many Tufts students, many of whom reside in Massachusetts, are frustrated with the current state of the Massachusetts Democratic Party. I sure am – and that's why I'm running for a leadership position in the state party.

Thrilled to announce an endorsement from Jivan Sobrinho-Wheeler. My first from a Cambridge City Councilor.

Almost 59% of the Democratic State Committee that governs the party are unelected. With a huge majority of the committee unaccountable to grassroots Democrats, it's no wonder that the Party's leadership doesn't address the major problems facing regular working people. It's an insular system that protects Massachusetts million and billionaire class and corporate special interests. We can't address economic inequality unless we fix our broken political system. Why Our Revolution Is Fighting To Make The Mass Democratic Party More Democratic 29/11/2023

I’m excited to be part of a movement to improve the Democratic Party. The party is losing young people and working class voters. Some people say it’s hopeless, but I don’t see a better path for labor.
