Happy 66th birthday to U.S. international Adolphus "Doc" Lawson, the speedy 6-foot defender who was born in Liberia but immigrated to the USA as a child and was a 2-time All America pick at Southern Connecticut State University, then signed with the Cincinnati Kids of MISL in 1978 - and was later picked by the San Jose Earthquakes in the 3rd round of the 1979 NASL Draft - and crafted an indoor / outdoor career that comprised 42 games with the Earthquakes (1979), San Diego Sockers (1979-80) and New York Cosmos (1984) and a far more successful indoor career with Cincinnati (1978-79), the Philadelphia Fever (1979-82), New York Arrows (1982-84), New York Cosmos (1984-85) and Dallas Sidekicks (1985-91), winning the 1987 MISL Championship, earning 5 MISL All Star nods, and helping the U.S. finish 3rd at the 1989 FIFA Futsal World Championship.

As the saying goes, "we stand on the shoulders of the giants that have come before us."

With the "success" of soccer in America, and globally, we forget how long it took to develop the game of "soccer" in America.

A dear friend sent this video of the 1981 ASL Champion Carolina Lightning. They defeated the New York United, which we honored at the Long Island Soccer Player Hall of Fame in 2018.

Lightning in a Bottle...
https://youtu.be/ck14IFneISg

As you watch this short film, you will see glimpses of some familiar Long Island faces from the defeated NY United and the "Long Island Defense Corp!"

A "Capacity Crowd" of 20,000 people. And remember, the ASL and then the NASL collapsed shortly after this and there was a 13 year absence of outdoor professional men's soccer in America!

Until the launch of Major League Soccer after World Cup '94 men's soccer in America struggled for existence for 70 years. Most "professional players" didn't make enough money to pay their bills and many teams would offer players jobs in addition to playing just so they could afford to play soccer.

There is another fairly well known saying, "success breeds contempt."

The "success" of American soccer, both men's and women's didn't begin with the "pioneers" of the 80's and 90's, but rather the men that played largely for the love and passion of the game for decades to build the foundation that the MLS, USMNT and USWNT now stand on.

And, of course, Pele' (the first multimillion dollar professional athlete in the world), Rodney Marsch, Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Mueller, George Best, Johan Cruyff, Eusebio and some of the greatest players in the world that came to establish soccer in America.

Thank God they did!!

Capping off a 22-0 perfect season is another remarkable feat for the Brentwood boy's soccer program. Head coach Ron Eden continued to add to his hall of fame resume too after he was named National Boy's Soccer Coach of the Year by United Soccer Coaches.

Coach Eden posted a heartfelt note on social media about the team's accomplishments:

"To the Brentwood Boys Soccer family it takes an army of people and players doing their jobs that helped me win this prestigious award . I want to thank all my players past and present for their amazing skill but more important their friendship. I want to thank all the coaches club , middle school
JV and Varsity past and present as I share this award with you . I want to thank all the parents who sacrificed to help their sons along the way without that we have nothing. I would like to thank the fans you are the best and you inspire the players to play harder. I would like to thank the school and Administrators who helped and hired me every year along the way. Last but not least my family who have sacrificed so much to let me do what I truly love, especially my loving wife Jeanette. In closing Ray Perez and Mr. Lown this is for you for believing in me ."

Congrats, coach!

Soooooo..... I appreciate the concern, but there are some huge holes in this story.

Any "soccer friends" that have played for more than 20 years, please feel free to jump in.

They estimated that ONE PLAYER headed the ball over 23,000 times in 2 years???!!!
That means a player would have to head the ball 32 times a day, every day for 2 years?
A team of 11 do not head the ball 23,000 times in 2 years?
A gross over exaggeration, whether intended or not. Maybe to create urgency?

There are some people that won't be happy until our kids are walking around in "bubble suits."
