Happy Grand Teton National Park spring, 399!

Big news: Jackson Hole Grizzly 399 lives and has one new cub at her side.

Amid reports swirling all day, her identity is confirmed. She appears to be in good health, observers say, and at age 27 she matches the oldest known grizzly mother to have a new cub since modern grizzly bear research began some seven decades ago. It is vitally important that she and her offspring (and all bears and wildilfe) be given space. Do that in honor of them. Photo courtesy Jacob Krank

It's that time of year again in Grand Teton National Park.

World awaits famous grizzly bear to emerge to see if it breaks a record A 27-year-old grizzly bear that has received worldwide attention could become a record-setter when it emerges from hibernation.

08/03/2023

The bears are re-emerging in Yellowstone National Park!

(News Release) On Tuesday, March 7, a Yellowstone National Park wildlife biologist on a radio telemetry flight observed the first grizzly bear of 2023 to emerge from hibernation. The adult bear, estimated at 300-350 pounds, was seen near the remains of a bison carcass in Pelican Valley, in the central-eastern part of the park.

The first bear sighting of 2022 also occurred on March 7.

Male grizzlies come out of hibernation in early March. Females with cubs emerge in April and early May. When bears emerge from hibernation, they look for food and often feed on elk and bison that died over the winter. Sometimes, bears will react aggressively to encounters with people when feeding on carcasses.

“Spring visitors skiing, snowshoeing, or hiking in Yellowstone National Park are reminded to carry bear spray and be especially alert for bears near carcasses and areas with early spring green-up. These are the first foods sought out by grizzlies after emerging from hibernations,” said Kerry Gunther, the park's bear management biologist.

All of Yellowstone National Park is bear country: from the deepest backcountry to the boardwalks around Old Faithful. The park restricts certain visitor activities in locations where there is a high density of bears, along with elk and bison carcasses. Restrictions will begin in some bear management areas on March 10.

Update: the northern part of Yellowstone National Park will almost certainly remain closed for the year. The southern loop will reopen when the park can figure out how to handle visitation. The usual number is too much for half the park. Later: how to get people to Cooke City and Silver Gate in winter until a new route is built from Gardiner to Mammoth. In human terms, the destruction is far greater and more debilitating long-term than the 1988 fires.

You can't beat YNP in May.

GRIZZLY 399, DAY BEFORE YESTERDAY!
Two days ago, Grizzly 399 and her four cubs appeared in an open meadow for a few minutes just before the sun dipped behind the Teton Range, where we were able to capture this photo of her. It was so wonderful watching her and the cubs digging in the field and wrestling around... seemingly without a care in the world. The fact that she raised an entire set of quadruplet cubs to sub-adulthood is statistically unheard of. In the recorded history of the Great Yellowstone Area, this has never happened before. And let us not forget that she is 26 years old! In all of our years in Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, we've come to know a lot of grizzly bears, and we can honestly say that Grizzly 399 (in our opinion) is the greatest grizzly that has ever lived.
