Every month we post about the New Moon and our favorite things to do at our New Moon Ceremonies but this month we’ve decided to focus on the “What & Why” behind a New Moon.
We’re going to answer the questions, What is a New Moon? and, Why can’t we see the moon during a New Moon? We think the moon is an especially magical time of the month, if you’re interested in learning about our favorite New Moon Ceremony tips, check out our previous month’s posts 🌚

What is a New Moon and why can’t we see the moon is the sky?
- The new Moon occurs when the Moon, Earth, and Sun all lie along approximately the same line. Since the Sun is behind the Moon from Earth's perspective, the side of the Moon that faces Earth is dark.
- This moon, sun, earth alignment leaves the side of the Moon that faces Earth in darkness, another name for this is called a conjunction or syzygy.
Interesting Fact! The New Moon is up in the daytime sky. It rises and sets around the same time as the Sun, bringing it too close to the Sun’s glare to be seen with the naked eye.
However, there is one special occasion when we can see a New Moon: during a solar eclipse. In fact, this is the only occasion that the New Moon is perfectly aligned.
