Since 2019 I’ve been working on a whole children’s ward at West Mid Hospital with The ward was originally painted lilac and white and felt very tired. It is the biggest project I have worked on to date with over 30 bed bays to decorate as well as all the corridors - I even designed the patient and nurse boards. I worked with children and staff to make patterns to use on the design which can be seen in the ‘starlight’ mural. All doors were painted in contrasting colours and oversized graphics were used to give a sense of height to the corridors. I designed a huge sticker pack (with some stickers 1 meter in diameter) to give us the greatest flexibility when putting up the graphics. It was hugely challenging installing in a very busy working ward but I’m really happy with the results and the feedback has been wonderful.

Here is the finished mural. When talking to Emma (who asked me if I’d be up for painting a community mural) she suggested the word Smile. It’s a great word but it can be sometimes used in a passive aggressive way (especially towards women) so I wanted to make it a little hard to spot. Some people see it straight away but when you are up close or cycling past, it isn’t so obvious. I like having layers to my work so that when you do see the word it’s like a little puzzle being solved. When we we’re painting it so many people smiled before they knew the word was hidden in there. I’ve also written a poem about smiling that will go on the small wall next to the mural soon. I’m thrilled how well it came out and how many hands of children and adults were involved in the painting, making it even more of a community mural.

A rusty old ‘I Think You Are Wonderful’ badge found at my mum & dad’s. I originally wanted to use phrase back when I was designing Good For Nothing magazine in the early 2000s. I suggested using the words on the cover of the summer issue and had this image of people reading the magazine (which was a London freebie) on the tube and buses and other passengers reading it giving them a little boost of being called wonderful. The editor and publisher didn’t go for it. So a few years later I made this badge and gave them away for free. People could send me stamped and addressed envelopes and I would post them out to whoever they wanted to call wonderful. I chose the word wonderful purposefully as it is something you could say to anyone. Years later the print I made using the phrase is still one of my most popular. It’s nice to be called wonderful.
