It was American type designer William Dwiggins who first conceived the term ‘Graphic Design’ in early 1922, although the art form had been around far longer and since the beginning of mankind itself; from the very first cave drawings right through to the creative industry we know today. Although these days it can take many forms in the shape of advertising, graffiti, fine art and every shade of grey in-between. They share nearly all the same disciplines from typography to perspective, and unite in giving a medium for thoughts, or a vehicle to express. The introduction of print had a massive part to play in the evolution of graphic design, with the earliest example of printed text being a book called ‘The Diamond Sutra,’ a Buddhist scripture dating back to 868AD. Block Printing made it easy to mass-produce text and initially grew with the religious need to spread “the word” as far and wide as possible. For the last 30 years or so computers have brought about a digital revolution in all aspects of design, and since the early 1990s you can pretty much bet that any billboard advert, company logo or event flyer, has been developed using Adobe Systems Software. Be it the infamous Photoshop for picture editing, or creating vector graphics in Illustrator. So how does Markus feature in all this? Markus Wilson was born in London 1983 years after Jesus Christ. From a young age he appreciated art and design. As a child he would copy pictures from magazines and try to pass them off as his own, whilst sending numerous drawings to Tony Hart, praying he would feature them on his TV show ‘Heartbeat’, but the man clearly had no taste! Since 2009 he has been working as a freelancer out of his studio in East London on design projects for corporates, restaurants, creative agencies and record labels. Clients include; the MET Police, Sony Music, Unilever, and a host of others. Graphic design is his passion and he feels blessed he can do it for a living. Money is not the goal for Markus, but to produce work that makes people think and stands the test of time. No matter what your budget, he is always happy to take a look and have a chat.
