**Resharing my old reel!** • I just made vanilla extract last night and did it the same way so I’m resharing! My two bottles I kept and just kept refilling lasted 1.5 years! 😱 I will never go back to store bought! • OG post from December ‘22: ⬇️ • Homemade vanilla extract is an easy, thoughtful gift for friends and family who love to bake! The only thing is, you gotta prepare for it. I made these back in July knowing they would need to steep for at least 4 months so they would be ready to be gifted and used at Christmas! 😍💪🏼 • I made some for myself too and will definitely continue to do this. Come do the chores with me!•Right now there isn’t too much going on so it’s pretty easy and only takes the boys and I about an hour to do!•On the chore list is: feed all 7 dogs, feed cats, feed all chickens, feed ducks, feed pork chop (up until a few days ago🍖), milk Marley, clean stanchion and make sure everyone has clean water!•The kids are getting bigger and stronger and are so helpful these days! (Unless they’re all having a meltdown then it’s not very helpful 😅) It’s so cute how they always want to help, it makes me so proud 🥹❤️•Now that we’re in the ‘offseason’ we’re going to get back into fencing, we need to deep clean the chicken coops and finish up some other projects we haven’t had time to complete yet. HERE ⬇️Elderberry ingredients:- 8 cups fresh elderberries- 1 cup water- 1 tsp cinnamon (or 2 whole sticks)- 1/2 tsp cloves- 2 tbsp freshly grated raw ginger- Honey (1/2 cup honey per 1 cup of elderberry JUICE)Instructions to make elderberry JUICE:- Add elderberries & water to pot and simmer on med/low heat for ~45min- Once simmering add cinnamon/cloves/ginger stirring occasionally until liquid reduces- Take off heat and let cool for a little (or you’ll burn your hands)- Using a cheesecloth on top of a fine mesh strainer, place on a bowl and squeeze as much juice out as you canFor fresh elderberry SYRUP:- Pour elderberry juice into pot and stir in honey on very low temp just until mixed- *remember- for every 1 cup of elderberry juice add 1/2 cup honey- Put in mason jar and store in fridgeCanning elderberry JUICE ingredients:- Elderberry juice- Bottled lemon juice- Pint or half pint jarsCanning elderberry juice instructions:- Sterilize jars- Add bottled lemon juice to jars*pints: 1 tbsp lemon juice in each jar*half pints: 1.5 tsp in each jar- Fill with elderberry juice leaving 1/4” headspace- Water bath for 10 minutes*when you go to use your canned elderberry JUICE, open and add the honey to make SYRUP••••#feltsfarm #farmfamily #familyfarm #farm #farmlife #homesteadinglife #selfsufficient #selfsustainable #growbuildraise #modernminihomestead #homesteadersofigchallenge #smallfarmcharm #homesteaddocumentary #homesteadshares #farmanimals #farmgirl #farmher #farmlove #homestead #homesteading #homesteadmama #growyourown #growyourownfood #canning #elderberry #elderberrysyrup #elderberryjuice #preserve #sickseason #holistic

7/16/21 the baby of the family was born and our lives changed forever 💙💙💙•Hudson is the stereotypical baby of the family, gets away with all the things and brings so much happiness, joy and laughter to all of us and everyone he’s around. He is an animal lover, hard worker already, so smart, adventurous, so so tough and brave, he’s affectionate and sweet and I’ve had the hardest time accepting he’s TWO! 🥹😭•To be honest, I was in complete denial and have actually cried daily for weeks (hence the very late post). How can our baby boy be two?! There is no way!!! But also, he acts like he’s 4?! 😅😭•Our little chunkamunka is so huge and strong, everywhere we go someone stops us and says “He’s going to be a football player!” 😂🏈 I hope he never changes 💙💪🏼•He is absolutely insane, completely nonstop, all over the place, keeps me on my toes from sunrise until sundown and actually has no off button unless he’s sleeping. Raising him is what I imagine raising twins is like 🤪 I’ve never met a more wild child. But I wouldn’t change it for anything!! He is a big ball of energy and happiness and we are so proud of him. I love how different all three boys are 💙•Hudson changed us all for the better and we couldn’t love him more. There’s a little more to it than that… always make sure your brooders are ready with bedding, water, food & heat lamps but then once the chicks arrive, it really is that simple! Open, dip their beaks in water and then just watch their cuteness! 😍🐥•We ordered 100 chicks but they always give a few extra just in case so we ended up with 106 little birds who are all doing great! 💪🏼•They will be in the brooders for a few weeks or until we feel like they’re big enough to be okay without heat lamps, then we’ll move them onto grass into their chicken tractors to live out their happy little lives ❤️🙌🏼•It’s very important to us that not only do we (Jacob & I) know where our food comes from but also that our boys understand. They know and have known their whole little lives that the animals we raise serve a purpose and they know that the food on their plates came from them. The kids are always a part of the process and watch everything from start to finish. There are no surprises and they will never be shocked that the chicken on their plate is in fact, a chicken. 🤪•Do you raise meat chickens? We will never not have them. Worms!!!!! 🪱💃🏼•We got our worms from @unclejimswormfarm and are so happy with them!! They came fast, healthy, all alive and well and have been hard at work already! 💪🏼🪱•We ended up getting two different kinds- 2,000 of the red composting worm mix and a few hundred super red European night crawlers for fishing.•Some facts about vermicompost 🪱:-regular earthworms cannot be used, composting worms are specialized surface dwellers who can live in rich organic matter like manure.-worm castings tea is a gardeners secret weapon! 💪🏼 it’s an organic fertilizer made from the castings and is filled with good bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes and protozoa that boost microbiological activity in the soil.-worm leachate is the liquid that drains out of the bin and should not be used in the garden or for anything. It is excess liquid from worms ‘sweating’ and doesn’t have any of the good microbes because it didn’t go through their digestive tract.-worms can double their population every 90 days!-they will naturally lay less eggs as their population becomes to dense in an area.-an average, each worm will produce their body weight in castings every day!•We are so excited about our worms and I’ve been learning so much already! We started a worm farm pt 2!!! 🪱•We decided to get two different kinds of worms- compost & fishing. I’ll talk more about that tomorrow!•Today I’m going to talk about how to set up a worm farm:-any type of big bucket or container would work, we chose to upcycle tubs because we had them and felt they’d be perfect since they already have a drain hole!-you’ll need to cover the drain hole with something that will let the worm tea drain but not the worms so we went with garden fabric around an extra metal grate from our hatcher and a rock on top to keep it in place.-just like any compost pile, you need a mix of ‘brown’ & ‘green’. All that means is poop+hay/leaves/food. Our compost from the pasture was already a mix of poop & hay so we felt comfortable using a big bulk of it. If the compost is mainly 💩 it will get too hot and kill the worms so you would need to layer in more hay or leaves or ‘green’. We have thermometers in ours to keep an eye on it!-once all the layers are added, spray down with water! You don’t want it drenched but more like a rung out sponge, nice and moist 😅🤪 and don’t forget a bucket under the drain hole to catch the prized worm tea!! 🪱-then the worms will be plopped on top with a damp piece of cardboard over them and a tarp to keep them cool and safe!•It’s been a fairly easy project since we used all things we already had. The worms have been doing their thing already and it’s so fun to watch!
