DEMOCRACY'S HEROES AND VILLAINS

As we celebrate democracy day today in Nigeria, there are many commentaries about the threats to democracy, and one that easily comes to mind in the context of recent events in Africa is: military rule. But is military rule a threat to democracy or an unfortunate and unwanted consequence of a failed democracy? There is a need to explore and understand the real villains or threats to democracy, as follows:

1) A political class that is only interested in winning elections, holding on to power, and enjoying the perks of public office rather than pursuing the imperative of the common good.
2) An electorate that either sells their votes for cheap inducements or abstains from voting because they naively believe their votes do not count.
3) Corrupt public officials and their private sector cronies who rob and steal the commonwealth so that they can store treasures for themselves and generations yet to be born.
4) The educated and privileged who sit back in silence and fail to muster the courage to speak truth to power, support "unpopular" candidates who have the character and capacity to transform, or offer themselves to contest in elections, only to whine and complain and discuss the "problems of Nigeria" (Chinua Achebe, 1983).

These are the people threatening democracy in Nigeria, and if you are one of them, please change your ways, so that we do not lose this precious gift of democracy and use it to transform our society for good.

Our heroes of democracy are all those who do the exact opposite each day and have taken a stand against all those listed above, regardless of partisan, ethnic, or religious affiliations. Our other heroes are those who have lived and died in the pursuit of these ideals. We honour them today and encourage them to be steadfast in their pursuit.

Unfortunately, on balance, there are more villains than heroes, hence the lack of dividends of democracy for the majority of our people, while a handful are smiling, partying, and feeding the kleptocracy that is seemingly overtaking our democracy.
