2) Tuesday, September 26 5-6:30 PM Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Workshop #2 Dr. Lucy Laufe: Collegewide Honors Director Paul Peck Building--PK105 Dr. Laufe will focus on writing transfer essays and creating academic resumes. These are skills necessary for all students who plan to transfer, not just for those applying to the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn from Dr. Laufe, who has been invited to be on the boards reading and selecting the scholarship winners. She knows what needs to be in your essay!


3) Wednesday, September 27 4:30-6:00 p.m. Columbia University—Matt Rothstein will discuss transfer opportunities at Columbia University in the Paul Peck Building—PK105. Even if you do not plan to attend Columbia University, you should attend because you will learn in a small group setting about the liberal arts curriculum offered at Ivy League colleges. Columbia is one of the 7 Ivy League colleges, and Matt Rothstein is very knowledgeable and approachable.


4) Sunday, October 1 12:45 meet in Lobby-Tour- 1-3:00 PM Tour of Holocaust Museum. Interested students will meet Professor Walsh at 12:45 in the Lobby of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

We have a new event added to our calendar—generously arranged by Dr. Lucy Laufe. It is the representative from Columbia University. Even if you have no desire to attend Columbia, it is an invaluable opportunity to hear what a college education means at an Ivy League institution.
Matt Rothstein has conducted a Columbia transfer workshop for Renaissance Scholars before, and he is quite approachable, impressive, and enlightening. The date is WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, FROM 5:00 TO 6:30 P.M. IN PK105.
If you are in the 5:00 p.m. seminar on Wednesday and want to attend, please let me know, and I will see if I can arrange for him to come a little early.

Wanted to share the employer visit that’s coming up this week the Germantown Campus (thanks as always to Pat McGlone for booking the visit(s)!!!)

Before we get to the visits, I would like to share with you that a very special, and very large, opportunity is about to open up for our students to find part- or full-time work in a variety of fields in Rockville Town Center. BRIGHTVIEW SENIOR LIVING is opening a brand new complex – and they have openings for students in a variety of majors – everything from caregivers, to bartenders (for their in-house pub which will be open to the community), to activity assistants, to a concierge for their in-house art gallery. A flyer and four new job descriptions are attached. Please share these with students!

BB&T BANK is planning on hiring more entry level personal – bankers – these are full-time jobs and a great start for a student looking to build or launch their career – please let students who are about to graduate know about this – they HOLD jobs for MC grads!

NIH Vaccine Research Center ( 12 noon – 2 pm in HT Lobby) - Recruiting healthy volunteers (there is some compensation for time and travel) for two vaccine studies:

Ø Healthy Volunteers needed for an investigational flu vaccine study.



Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center are testing investigational vaccines to determine if they are safe and effective at preventing influenza.

During the study you will:
· Complete a health screening including medical history, physical exam, and blood tests
· Receive either 1 or 2 investigational flu vaccines
· Have 8-10 outpatient visits over 40 weeks
· Receive compensation for your participation

You may be eligible if you:
· Are healthy and between the ages of 18 and 70 (excludes those born from 1966 to 1969)
· Have a BMI less than or equal to 40 (calculate your BMI at https://go.usa.gov/x5My6)
· Do not have any medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease or psychiatric condition
· Are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant


This study is being conducted at the NIH Clinical Center, located on the Metro red line (Medical Center stop) in Bethesda, Maryland.

PURPOSE:

2) To provide a maximum of $1,000 in merit-based scholarship tuition coverage to Renaissance Scholars who enroll in up to two of the following liberal arts courses: *

Global Studies at Work in DC
July 6--24, 2017

Through a series of site visits to think tanks, governmental agencies, and non-governmental organizations
in Washington, D.C., participants in this course will explore ways to apply global studies beyond the classroom.
Through site visits, classroom active learning, and reflective assignments, students will learn about
and research potential career pathways in global studies – accessible from a variety of degree programs.
Classroom location: Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus
Course Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to
• Identify the distinct types of global studies organizations operating out of Washington, D.C.
• Identify the missions of each organization visited during the course.
• Explore the types of majors and educational requirements needed to apply for jobs at each of the sites
visited in the course.
• Adjust professional self-presentation (attire, greetings, etc.) to different agency settings.
• Create a personalized career development roadmap for a global studies career.
