HOW TO MEASURE
STANDARD OVERLAY

Cabinet face frames are typically made with a 1 1/2" material.

If your cabinet face frames are standard 1 1/2" and you want the look of standard overlay, you would measure the door/drawer front openings then add 1” to the openings width AND height to get the door and drawer front sizes. This means the door is 1” wider than the opening, making it overlay 1/2" on each side.

You can find 1/2" overlay hinges in a section on the left side of the screen.

14/10/2022

HOW TO MEASURE
FULL OVERLAY

To achieve a full overlay on a framed cabinet we recommend you use a hinge overlay of 1/4" less than the width of your cabinet frames.

Most cabinets are made with 1 1/2" face frame.
In this case, you would use 1 1/4" overlay hinges.
That means the door is 2 1/2" wider than the opening, making it overlay 1 1/4" on each side. This provides a nice full overlay effect without risk of interference from adjacent doors.

If you have an opening that uses two doors butted together, measure the width of the full opening then add 2 1/2", divide that in half, then subtract 1/16th from each door. This will give you room to adjust the center gap between the two doors after they are hung. You would still add 2 1/2" to the height of the doors.

You can follow the same recommendation for the Width of your drawer fronts.
The height of the drawer fronts is up to you because it doesn’t affect any hardware.
On base cabinets, typically, you would leave 1/2" clearance above the doors and drawer fronts and 1/4" clearance between the drawer front and a door.
Typically, you would leave 1/4" space below the doors.

Tip:
You can mark a pencil line on the cabinet face where you want each piece to end up, to make taking your measurements easier.

Diagonal corner cabinets should also be adjusted to 1” overlay.
That means the door is 2” wider than the opening. You would order 1” overlay hinges for this type of door.
Most cabinets feature a 1 1/2" face frame. In this case, you would use 1 1/4" overlay hinges (add 2 1/2" to the width of your opening).

HOW TO MEASURE
INSET DOORS AND DRAWER FRONTS

The doors and drawer fronts should be 1/8" smaller than the opening width and height.

You can find our inset hidden hinges in a section on the left side of the screen.

If you're replacing your cabinet doors you might wonder what's the best way to get your new sizes. You could just measure your old doors or you could make them larger for a full overlay effect for a fresh new look.

Here's some detailed info that might come in handy especially if you're also ordering new hinges.

Standard Overlay:
To get your new doors sizes when replacing hinges we recommend you add 1" to the width and height of your cabinet openings for your doors and drawer fronts. This gives you the industry standard 1/2" overlay on all sides of the opening.

If you have an opening that uses two doors butted together, measure the width of the opening and add 1", divide that in half, then subtract 1/16th from each door. This will give you room to adjust the gap between the two doors after they are hung. You would still add 1" to the height of the doors.

Full Overlay:
To achieve a full overlay effect (the doors and drawers cover most of the cabinet frames) on a framed cabinet we recommend you use a hinge overlay of 1/4" less than the width of your cabinet frames. Most cabinets feature a 1 1/2" face frame. In this case, you would use a 1 1/4" overlay hinge (adding 2 1/2" to the width of your opening). This provides a nice full overlay effect without risk of interference from adjacent doors.

You can use a greater overlay but keep in mind you must leave room (1/8" minimum) where the doors meet back to back on the hinge side to ensure proper functionality.

If you have an opening that uses two doors butted together, measure the width of the opening and add 2 1/2", divide that in half, then subtract 1/16th from each door. This will give you room to adjust the center gap between the two doors after they are hung. You would still add 2 1/2" to the height of the doors.

I decided to replace the doors on my kitchen cabinets. They were originally built by the carpenters that also built my log home 37 years ago. They used the left over tongue and groove pine. The doors were “tired” but the boxes were fine. I went with the “Dalton” door with unfinished select maple wood and had them bored for hidden hinges. EVERY SINGLE DOOR is gorgeous and perfect. Could not be happier with how well they were packaged for shipment and the communications back and forth to finalize my order was excellent. I finished them with Heirloom Traditions All-In-One chalk paint adding one ounce of the Polo Blue to a quart of the Cobblestone Gray. They are as smooth as glass! I am thrilled with the results!! It brings out the beauty of my Red oak hardwood floors and the cream Corian countertops look better than ever!

Many thanks,
Sally S., Mystic CT

Thank you Teresa for the great before and after photos!

We were very pleased with our purchase! We were sent a sample so we could have our matching paint ready.
They arrived when they were scheduled. I had to have another door made (we scratched one) and it came quickly.
We were able to remodel for a fraction of the cost. I have included before and after photos. I would highly recommend!
