In celebration of Earth Day, Taylor Design is proud to "adopt" multiple beehives on family-owned and community-supported farms across the country. By adopting a hive, you too can help support the purchase of equipment, hives, bees and spread the word about the benefits of saving the bees while also saving the environment.

Taylor Design would like to celebrate Allison Couture, a Senior Interior Designer in our Irvine office who has been with the firm for 13 years. We asked Allison what advice she would give her younger self starting out in design. “Be kind to yourself,” she advised, “Find your design niche and hone your craft within it.”

Allison talked about other female mentors that positively impacted her career, “I’ve had the pleasure of working with many female mentors over the years. There isn’t just one who impacted my career, I think of the collective group of female leaders that have influenced my career and journey in the design industry, with a deep appreciation for the role they played in my life. These women are incredible humans, whether it be their strength, creativity, ability to laugh, their self-awareness, or simply how they hold a room, each attribute has shaped me into the designer I am today. “

We want to celebrate Shawna Hinrichs, who has been a Project Manager in our San Francisco office for over 7 years. She offers this advice before starting out your career in Architecture: “Continue to focus on ways to grow and educate yourself, set goals just as you did in school to complete classes and degrees. Even though projects may take years, it will move quickly. When deadlines and tasks get heavy or too much, remember your inspirations and your passions, they will drive you through the projects and the years. Continue to trust yourself on the decisions that you need to make to help you navigate through your career.”

When asked who has positively impacted her career the most, Shawna shared that “leaders who impacted me the most were men, advocates for women, and women who taught me how to work with each other as a team and grow relationships while doing it. They taught me that every person and position was equal on a project team. To be proud of the work and that all of the people are needed and important in each of their roles to create a finished and great project.”

Taylor Design would like to celebrate Alejandra Nadal, Architect, EDAC, and Senior Project Manager in our San Diego office for over 5 years and asked her to provide her advice to her younger self. She said that what is most important starting out in Architecture is to “Always be curious, ask questions; be proactive, don’t wait to be told; absorb the knowledge of the people around you that are willing to share; and most importantly, your work is a representation of who you are, so always give it your 110%.”

“When I was 12 years old, I met Architect Socorro Amaya de Curiel; after that, my future was decided,” Alex shared, adding “In college I had the opportunity to intern for her firm on a summer break and she made the same impression on me that she did when I was 12. She was the only female Architect I knew and that summer she taught me values to strive for: dedication, patience, hard work, humbleness, collaboration and the poised demeanor she projected once she entered the office; for that I am grateful.”

Taylor Design is celebrating Mackenzie Bray, who has worked as a Project Architect in our San Francisco office for over 3 years.

What advice would she give her younger self? “Don’t be afraid of what you don’t know,” Mackenzie stated, “Embrace it. Ask all the questions!”.

On what other female leaders in the design community has positively impacted her career, Mackenzie shared that “growing up on the west coast, we visited Hearst Castle almost every summer. I idolized Julia Morgan and wanted to be just like her. When I got to architecture school, I had a bit of an existential crisis when I learned that her work for Hearst wasn’t held in very high regard by those practicing the profession. (I also saw Citizen Kane). But I took what I knew of her personality, her work ethic, her perseverance as the first licensed female architect and tried to apply that to my own career. Now I can admire how she managed such a monumental project for a ‘Type A client’ lasting multiple decades (and just as many contractors) as well as completing countless other works. I can also appreciate the beauty of her style without endorsing the supreme abuse of power that may have supported it.”

Taylor Design is greatly saddened to announce the passing of our friend and Board Member, Jim Cora, on March 21, 2021. Immediately, Jim brought his own magic and passion to Taylor Design, along with a wicked sense of humor, and created a lasting legacy that will be with us forever. His passing is a deep loss to the Taylor Design family and we are thankful for the good fortune to know him.
