Top tips for protecting your skin from the winter sun ❄️☀️

Lower UV levels mean our skin is less at risk from those burning skin rays, but if you're outdoors a lot or heading off somewhere for some winter sun, here's some tops tips to protect your skin:

1. Use hydrating and nourishing cleansers rather than alcohol-based cleansers to prevent skin drying out.

2. Splash a few drops of water on your face before applying moisturisers and serums. This helps to lock moisture into the skin.

3. Apply a balm to cheeks and lips before heading outside to prevent drying out and chapping.

What is your microbiome?

We all have a natural ecosystem of skin flora on the surface of our skin. This ecosystem is made up of millions of tiny microorganisms which protect our skin barrier from damage, produce nutrients and lipids, and balance our pH.

By going vegan in your skincare routine, you can switch to products which are plant-powered. Plant-based ingredients are often packed full of more vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and natural oils which create a healthier complexion than many of the animal-based alternatives.

Non-vegan ingredients to look out for include gelatin, beeswax and lanolin, but the easiest way to tell if your products are vegan and cruelty-free are to look out for the labels.

Did you know that isn't typically a skin type, but a condition which has arisen from over-use or mis-use of skincare products?

Most of us will naturally be dry, oily or combination skin, but with the increasing number of products available to us, we are developing more sensitivities as we expose our skin to more ingredients.

How to avoid sensitising your skin:
1. Avoid using too many products in your routine. A cleanser, serum and moisturiser are a simple routine if you're trying to avoid flare ups.

2. Avoid over using actives like retinol and acids. These can disrupt the skin barrier and trigger breakouts, dermatitis and other skin conditions. Instead, actives should be used as short term treatments, with breaks in between.

3. Avoid fragranced products if you have an active flare up. Fragrance can irritate the skin (natural or synthetic) further, but is usually ok if you have calm skin.

First thing's first; all skin has its own unique texture, so if you've got a few lumps and bumps then don't panic! Texture is normal and certainly not bad.

Skin texture can be from dry skin that is in need of moisture, clogged pores which are in need of exfoliation, or pimples and spots which are in need of oil-rebalancing.

Understanding your skin's texture can help you to decide what products to use and how to change up your routine. DM us with any of your texture questions!

Our top 3 tips for a natural glow:

1. Don't over-cleanse; too much cleansing will strip your skin of its natural oils, meaning less glow. One cleanse a day in the evening is plenty.

2. Exfoliate once a week to keep your skin smooth, the perfect base for the glow to begin.

3. Stay hydrated! We know, it's all we talk about! Be sure to drink lots, eat healthy fats, and apply your moisturiser especially over night. (But of course have cheat days).
