Forty years ago, in their scouting report for the USFL's 1984 season, Sports Illustrated predicted that the Philadelphia Stars would finish second behind the New Jersey Generals in the USFL's Atlantic Division.

The Stars lost both regular season games against the Generals before defeating them in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. The Stars then defeated the Birmingham Stallions in the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. The Stars defeated the Arizona Wranglers in the 1984 USFL Championship Game.
