CGS Volunteer Opportunity – Proofreaders Wanted

Many of you are familiar with our funeral home book project. Indices have now been created for all 34 books and we have been in the proofreading stage. We will have our next proofreading event at a Chicago Public Library branch library on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 10 am - 1 pm. We will be in groups of two matching the index against the source book. We have been making great progress with this endeavor.

If you are interested in helping to proofread that day, please contact us at [email protected] with ATTN Funeral Book in the subject line.

Say hello to Bertha Haedike, bon in Chicago about 1895 to Albert and Bertha Otto Haedike. Her parents divorced about 1905-06 and mother and child are listed in the 1910 Federal census of Chicago but they seem to have disappeared after that. Can anyone help find this young lady?

We are looking at a CdV photo of Louise Smith Merritt taken in Chicago at the Gentile studio (SE corner State & Washington) about 1877. A daughter of William and Clementine Smith, she was born in Johnson, Wisconsin in December 1851. She married Merritt Darrow at Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin in December 1876. They then moved to Chicago. She died in February 1942 in Winnetka, Illinois. Her body was shipped to Janesville, Wisconsin where she was buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery there with her husband (d. 1910).

This is a photo of Jacob Veidt which was probably not taken in Chicago even though Canova Studios existed in the city in the late 1880s. His dress indicates the 1860s. He had a son name Julius. The whole family seems to have been a Wisconsin family. Any ideas as to why this photo and one of Julius are reprinted on Canova Studios cabinet cards?
