(Test-Enhanced Learning, Henry L. Roediger, III, and Jeffrey D. Karpicke, 2006)
researchers split students into two groups and found that the group that did a practice test fared considerably better in the final exam than their counterparts who did not partake in the mock exam and had instead spent the entire time revising the subject matter. This was attributed to the fact that writing mock exams helps solidify and retain information (known as the testing effect). While on the other hand, rote memorization negatively impacts critical thinking and application skills.
