Do you read Nutrition Information/Food fact labels on food packages? Well, you should. It's mostly on food packaging materials. It's not meant or designed to beautify the package, it is meant to educate you to make informed decisions/choices on foods you buy especially for your health. It shows you the key nutrients in the food and the servings.
A few days ago, I was so hungry and decided to eat noodles, however, I ended up writing about it on my WhatsApp status. So, I thought to share it here. I can't share the particular Noodles brand nutrition label here but you can check the ones you have at home.
The average person consumes two or more packs of noodles along with other ingredients (foods) including sardines, salted beef/ sausages, seasonings, egg, soy sauce and so on. Eating 2 packs of small noodles alone without adding anything gives you almost the total sodium(salt) recommendation per day, and even more when you add other ingredients that contain sodium.
While you require no more than 2300mg of sodium (salt) per day, not per meal ( 1 teaspoon not tablespoon o ), A pack (70-100ngn size) of noodles contains 500mg - 1250mg of sodium*. Depending on the brand, check the nutritional information/label on it.
No, noodles are not horrible but our frequent consumption of them is concerning. The sodium(salt) content, recipes/method of cooking gangan ni Koko.
If only we can stick to 1 small pack, once or twice a week. beht!!!!!🤔🤔🤔. Somebody reading this is already grumbling now, lol. Like, just one pack for a whole you?😂
Is sodium bad? No.
Our body needs sodium(salt). Our heart needs sodium.
Sodium is an essential nutrient necessary for the maintenance of plasma volume, acid-base balance, the transmission of nerve impulses and normal cell function. Sodium is found naturally in a variety of foods(fish, milk, meat, soy sauce etc) even pastries, bread, and preservatives.
However, you know what they say about too much of something right?
High sodium consumption contributes to high blood pressure and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Be intentional about your food.
Read Food Fact labels/Information.

So, there is this voice note about nutrition, eating for your genotype, wheat causing diabetes and so on, by a woman that has been going around on WhatsApp for a while now. I had decided to ignore it until my sister called my attention to it again yesterday.
There is so much nutrition information out there, unfortunately, much is from non-professionals and quacks "attempting" and "hustling" to sell their products or promote their company (marketing gimmicks). Many of their claims are speculations and are not scientifically proven.
As a public health nutritionist and Registered Dietitian(RDN), I believe it is important I enlighten us on how to identify these false claims. I've only mentioned about 5 points so far, but there are many more.
Before jumping on new trends, consult your Registered Dietitians and Nutritionists.
Please, read all the slides.

For many girls in Nigeria, having their period means putting their life on hold. Menstruation is stigmatised in some cultures, and females often avoid school and other social activities during their periods to avoid embarrassment.
Girls' periods are made more difficult by a lack of access to a functioning and segregated restrooms, insufficient information on menstrual hygiene management, and restricted availability of sanitary supplies to control menstruation. (UNICEF)
WASH.ng .ng is a project by Pinnacle Reaching Initiative to;
• Provide information about Water, Sanitation, and hygiene.
• Promote positive hygiene habits.
•Make sanitary products like sanitary pads, tampons, menstrual cups, soaps, sanitisers, sponges and new underwear more available to those in need.

TO YOUNG REGISTERED DIETITIAN-NUTRITIONISTS ::: Random Rants turned to Advise to young Registered Dietitian -Nutritionist like myself
There is always one thing about your job that stresses you. Mine is Meal planning.
Don't even be surprised if I become an intuitive eating dietitian because what's all these wahala about and some will not even follow the plan.
Meal Planning is draining, exhausting and time-consuming. It's not as easy as many of you think. We spend hours and days on calculations, cross-checking the food exchange list and Food composition table.
The funny thing is that most professionals (Registered Dietitians -Nutritionists) don't even charge as much as online quacks. We put health and passion before money but it's the other way for those people.
To young dietitians reading this; please charge a fee that is worth your effort, passion and time. You deserve it. Do not underestimate yourself or your effort. You are worth more.
If you want to go far in nutrition private practice, approach and work as a dietitian with business orientation/sight/view/mind. See yourself as a businessman or woman and not just as a health worker. Every knowledge or information disbursed, released should be calculated, accounted or paid for.
You won't go far if you keep doing free consultation/assessment up and down.
I am telling you this because I have been there. You don't need to prove to them that you know what you are doing. They are aware that you know, they just want freebies. Look outside, move out, put yourself out, there are lots of people who are willing to pay you thousands for your knowledge.
You do not have pepper or onions to sell, what you sell is your services, knowledge, years of learning, interning and studying. I have still not heard of a university that offers a scholarship in Human Nutrition and Dietetics in Nigeria. Be wise👂.
Am I asking you not to put out nutrition tips? No. Put out tips, create awareness, educate people.
But there are services you do not render for free no matter what. You are not being wicked. You are just being smart and future conscious.
To be able to do this, study well. Study to show yourself approved. Be confident and keep your head up.
Also, you don't have to do what everyone is doing, find your path. There are over 50 specialisation options in the Nutrition profession, from Hospital/Health/ Clinical, Public Health, Media, Food Industry, Ministries of Health, Education & Defence, NAFDAC, Culinary, NGOs etc
Be good and smart about what you know. Choose your niche and grow. While growing give but don't forget yourself. Learn and unlearn.
Finally, I don't know how my rants became about young dietitians/nutritionists.
What an elder sees while sitting even if a child stands he/she may not see it (i hope I got the proverb right😊)
Do not be too far away from those who have gone ahead of you. You don't have to keep everyone as mentor or boss but you need people who have done it or have been there. You can watch from afar like I normally do but do not be too far. Do not let your jotter and pen be too far. Do not burn all bridges, keep in touch. Ire o❤

NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH ::: LESSON 2
Did you know that a nutritionist is not always a dietitian but a dietitian is always a nutritionist?
I.e all dietitians are nutritionists but not all nutritionists are dietitians.
In a country like ours, where anyone can just call themselves a nutritionist based on a personal weight loss experience or after one or two Google checks /subscriptions/workout sessions.
The term "Nutritionist" is not regulated as much as it should, that's why you see almost everyone on social media telling you what to eat and not to eat, somebody can just wake up and start selling slimming or detox tea, cook up stories and sell to those who are ignorant. Anyone who didn't study the course in an accredited university can just claim to be a nutritionist and most likely nobody will question them.
However, it is regulated in some countries, you can't just claim to be or call yourself a nutritionist without proper education or certification. There are active and working regulations and boards.
Whereas the term "Dietitian" is regulated.
✅It means the person graduated with at least a bachelor degree from an accredited university.
✅-Completed 1200 hour (or 1 year) internship of supervised practice in an accredited institution
✅ Passed the National examination by the ( National Board)
✅Maintains continuing professional education hours
