1. St George’s Day falls on 23rd April every year. This is the date when Saint George died. It is believed he died on 23rd April in the year 303 AD.
2. Even though he is the patron saint of England, he wasn’t actually born here. He was born in a place called Cappadocia. In the modern day, that would be in Turkey!
3. St George isn’t just the Patron Saint of England! He is the Patron Saint of farmers, soldiers, archers and even… scouts!
4. Legend has it that George slayed a dragon. The story says that he rode into a place called Silene and saved the city from the scary dragon. He also saved a Princess! Sadly this story was actually made up. It is believed that it was made up after George even existed!
5. Historians believe that George was never a knight in shining armour…They believe he was a Roman soldier!

St George’s Day - 23rd April 2024. The children learnt about St George and as you can see the children had great fun dressing up as characters from the story. They then made their own shield and sword just in case they come across any dragons of their own.

otters learning all about healthy eating. they named lots of different fruits and vegetables. They all did very well, but found naming a swede and pomegranate a little tricky. They all tired a number of different yummy fruits. Surprisingly, the lemon went down very well. 🍇 🍈 🍉 🍎 🍌

SHROVE TUESDAY
Shrove Tuesday is a Christian festival celebrated in many countries across the globe. It falls on the Tuesday before the beginning of Lent – a period of around six weeks leading up to Easter. During Lent, Christians give up luxuries to remember when Jesus went into the desert for 40 days to fast and pray.
The exact date of Shrove Tuesday changes from year to year. But one thing stays the same — it’s always 47 days before Easter Sunday.
The name comes from the old word ‘shriving’, which means to listen to someone’s sins and forgive them. In Anglo-Saxon England, Christians would go to church on Shrove Tuesday to confess their sins and clean their soul.
Traditionally during Lent, Christians would give up rich, tasty foods such as butter, eggs, sugar and fat (some Christians continue to do so, in fact). Shrove Tuesday was the last chance to eat them – and what better way to do so than with a delicious pancake!

The Otters had a fun night learning about the Chinese New Year celebrations. They used chopsticks to pick up a fortune cookie and looked at the 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac. If you ask them they will tell you which animal relates to their year of birth. They then all took it in turn to be a dragon and chased me round the church. 🐉
