Many consumers could see immediate cost benefits by tuning up their air conditioners and HVAC equipment, energy professionals said. Residents should be sure to replace filters to keep their AC from doing extra work, for example, and consider hiring a technician to perform a process called a Manual J, which calculates the amount of heating and cooling output required for your home. Recent studies by the National Institute of Standards and Technology have shown that improper installation of HVAC equipment can lead to a 30% increase in energy use.
Ninety percent of consumers wait until their HVAC systems break down to replace them, said Barton James, president and CEO of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America."
