A teen dropped out of high school during WWII. Now 99, she just graduated. Eleanor Monninger graduated Saturday at the age of 99 — more than 80 years after leaving high school to help on the family farm while her brother fought in World War II.

The National Girls Collaborative Project has just released a report on the state of girls in STEM. The report has five major recommendations:

1. Create a program to acknowledge corporations who support girls and women in STEM.
2. Build the capacity of corporations to collaborate with and support K-12 STEM education efforts.
3. Develop a new model for illustrating the complex influences on girls and women in STEM.
4. Develop and disseminate a comprehensive report on the state of girls and young women in STEM.
5. Create an online clearinghouse focused on gender equity and STEM initiatives and resources.

The monthly meeting of the Dickinson County Library Board takes place tonight at 4:45pm. The earlier time is due to the annual budget hearing which is first and then they proceed into the regular monthly meeting.
This is the last meeting for the very dedicated, long time board member, Katie Driscoll, who sadly for our library was NOT reappointed by the Dickinson County Board of Commissioners.
It would be great to have an audience of library supporters there to wish her well and thank her for her many years of service!

The Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley, an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, is the book selected for Michigan Humanities' 2023-2024 Great Michigan Read. The Great Michigan Read creates a statewide discussion around a Michigan themed book. Through partnerships with libraries, schools, book clubs, and a wide range of other non-profit organizations, the Great Michigan Read facilitates statewide reading and programs to bridge communities around a common conversation.

The Traditional and Hoeffler Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce out 2022 Scholarship recipients. The Hoeffler Scholarship will be awarded to Trestan Larson from Kingsford High School, and the two Traditional Scholarships will be awarded to Mackenzie Gilroy of Norway High School and Luisa Muñoz-Ozzello of Kingsford High School. More information about the schools that they will be attending and their majors will be forthcoming. All applicants are to be commended for their thoughtful essays and school related accomplishments!
