San Rafael Heritage is giving a FREE “Equinox Event” party on Sunday, Sept. 24. San Rafael Heritage is a local architectural historic preservation society. The celebration will feature live music, free food and libations, great views from the beautiful private home venue.
Also there will be a short illustrated lecture on the evolution of San Rafael's first Fire Station by Laura Ackley, author of "San Francisco's Jewel City: The Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915."
After you register you will receive an e-mail with the actual address of the Equinox Event.

Here’s the description of the lecture:
"San Rafael’s first firemen kicked up dust as they dragged heavy, two-wheeled fire wagons as through the unpaved streets of the small, 800-odd resident town. This illustrated lecture by historian Laura Ackley traces the history of San Rafael’s first Fire Company from those low-tech-yet-resourceful beginnings until today. Using many rare images, she will also describe the many modifications that allowed the 1917 Mediterranean-Revival station to remain in operation for an entire century, as well as the next steps in the evolution of San Rafael’s original Fire Company."
This lecture is about San Rafael’s fire department, but mirrors the way fire departments developed over much of California.
If you would like to become a member of San Rafael Heritage, supporting preservation of San Rafael’s historic architecture for only $20 a year, you can do so at the party, or online at https://www.sanrafaelheritage.org/

Alexander Forbes, a native of Inverness, Scotland was a member of the San Francisco firm of Forbes Brothers, importers and commission merchants. He was of the principal landowners of San Rafael from the late 1850's, until his death in 1883. In 1887 he subdivided the west end of San Rafael valley, from H Street and from Second Street north to Forbes Avenue, also including G Street north of Fifth Street and Culloden Park.
Foster Hall was originally built by Thomas O'Conner, also the builder of the old City Hall, and was donated by F.A.Foster in 1892 to the Tamalpais Military Academy, later the San Rafael Military Academy and now a private high school. The four dormitories, on either side of the WWI military barracks were shipped down the Sacramento River by barge.
The end of G Street formed the drive to "Burnside Manor", the home of shipping magnate Thomas Menzies, from which the lane to to Culloden Park derives it name. It is now a charming cul-de-sac of early 20th century homes. The Forbes a large 3 level building with a tower and a 2 level veranda, was located at Culloden Park. It burned to the ground in July 1888. Marin Heritage 1940.
